Driving With Split Oil Filler Hose

Recommended Posts

maturin23

Hi guys,

Just had a sad bit of news - my grandmother passed away :)

She had great life and a peaceful end at 92 and even at the end she was still living in her own house.

As a result I'm planning on heading up to the Lakes to offer my parents some moral support, I'll be taking the Focus and leaving the Pug for Deb/Tom.

I noticed yesterday that the oil filler/breather pipe has split right where it attaches to the bottom of the engine - common sense tells me it would be stupid to use it until I've replaced it, but when I moved from the drive onto the round it didn't seem to be losing any oil other than was was in the tube in the first place.

Is it useable for short journeys?

cheers

ian

I wouldnt, as soon as its run enough the head will fill and then the main oil return is down the pipe from cam cover to the T just before your split and then it will start coming out quite badly. Can it not be tyrimmed back to behind the split or is it too close to the T? Other option is to fit some kind of sleeve inside it and bang some jubilees around it.

Dont know if you still have your 8v engine lying around, but you can use the equivalent hose from the 8v breather setup. Its not perfect being a bit long, but it does work.( my mi16 hose was also split.)

Mine's cracked and splitting too on an Mi - hence I've just been compelled to order a shiny silicon jobby (a hose NOT a poo :P ) from Miles. I think we're all talking the same one - it has a right angled metal pipe off it at the sump end, a few inches from the end?

Mine has been split for a while, around the takeoff for the smaller breather pipe where it attaches to the block. Anyway mine has been fine, hasnt really lost any oil out of it, although its not exactly a gaping hole so i didnt expect it to be that bad (and ive just got a new pipe anyway). Maybe try a quick fix for now whilst sourcing another pipe? Halfords used to do repair bandage for water hoses, im sure this would do the job in the short term. ;)

Cheers for this - it's more of a complete split that a small hole, so will need to replace the whole thing.

I'll have another look through my spare parts mess in the shed - I thought I'd had a look at the 8v one and decided it wouldn't fit.

thanks guys

Ian
