bitchass 205 0 Posted March 23, 2007 Hi all, I've noticed a slight knocking noise coming from the wheels/brakes. Whenever i reverse and apply the brakes, or whenever i turn on full lock, again reversing, there is a slight knocking or what feels like something is catching. It doesn't happen all the time and nothing happens when i'm braking normally, or turning normally. I changed the front discs and pads a couple of weeks ago and nothing was amiss. Any one got any ideas? Cheers Michael
jonah 1 Posted March 23, 2007 Very very common with worn 1.6 front calipers. Chuck 'em away and put 1.9 front calipers on instead - they are a straight swap (you will need the mounting bolts off the 1.9 and different pads obviously, but you continue to use 1.6 discs). Dixon 1 Posted March 23, 2007 Definatly the brakes and not the CV joint? As that sounds like CV symptoms.

Found this: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?s...c=29312&hl= interesting read i'll try to find some 1.9 calipers. Definatly the brakes and not the CV joint? As that sounds like CV symptoms. As for cv probs, what sort of symptoms would i have? Thats pretty common with 1.6 calipers, do a search and you'll find a lot on the subject. Turned up a few, but i'm never really sure what i'll find when i type stuff into the search function. Edited March 23, 2007 by bitchass
Dixon 1 Posted March 23, 2007 As for cv probs, what sort of symptoms would i have? If one has split and knackered then you will get a rotational knocking from it. A lot more noticable when turning and thus putting a load on it. And when mine had gone it seemed quite loud when reversing for some reason, which is what made me think of yours being the CV. oli-pug 6 2 Cars Posted March 23, 2007 sounds the same as the noise im getting. its down to knackered calipers ..so change to the better designed 1.9 girlings ones or go for an upgrade?
pugpete1108 62 1 Cars Posted March 23, 2007 mine had the same problem on my 1.6 callipers, it feels like they are catching on something mostly in reverse though. even when i put ew disks and pads it still did it, my next course was the hydraulics m/c etc. but it never gt that far as it got stripped for the gti6 i also changed both front callipers to try and cure it but still it happened. seems like its a common problem then by the sounds of it. After reading, and re-rereading your post on this subject, is it possible to fit new sliders into the 1.6 calipers? i only ask as i have only just fitted new pads and if i go for the girling caliper i'll need new pads. if the slider replacements are cheap enough i can be fitted a'la diy then it could be a cheaper option? pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 29, 2007 After reading, and re-rereading your post on this subject, is it possible to fit new sliders into the 1.6 calipers? Looking on the parts cd you should be able to get a rebuild kit which includes the sliders & all seals from Peugeot (& maybe a bendix dealer) but I doubt they will be as cheap as a set of brake pads for the 1.9 calipers.
