Starter Problem - Have Changed Starter Motor

Recommended Posts

Trick

MI16.

Changed std starter motor as when i turned the key it just clicked and nothing happened.

Put new one (second hand) in and it did the same to start with, but then fired.

Anyway, tried again this morning and it seems to be doing a similar thing, a few tries and it works.

ITs either another problem, or the starter motor i bought was faulty.

How do i check to see if its starter motor?

Can I tag along with this one because I have a similar issue BUT instead of clicking, it turns but not enough?

I was advised on a hot (temp wise) Mi, the old solenoid & starter combo kind of sticks. Either way I'm in the same boat as you as a new starter hasn't fixed the problem. My alternator's been checked and charges OK; I'm on my third battery too. :P

Are our problems linked??

Rich :)

Have a search under "brown multiplug" It sounds like a weak supply to the solenoid. You can check this by running a spare wire from the solenoid connection (blue wire) and touching the wire to the + of the battery.Starter should spin freely, And start if ignition is on .

I've run a temporary wire from the solenoid, through the bulkhead to the start supply of the ignitioin switch, where it was spliced for the immobiliser-works a treat.

Also may be worth checking that the starter is properly aligned- back the starter bolts off slightly,so the starter will just wiggle and try cranking.Often the locating dowels are missed out when the starter is replaced, allowing the starter to be pulled out of allignment when the bolts are tightened. Either replace the dowels or rotate the starter slightly and hold in position when tightening. Just a gnat,s c@ck seems to be enough to send you to click-click hell!

Check the earth strap from the engine.

You might also wanna get someone to hold the key in the start position and give the starter a tap if its the solenoid sticking it should kick in and turn.

Run a wire off the battery positive, if it works every time then you know its a lack of voltage. Check the brown multiplug and maybe bypass the starter wire (thick blue one).
