Undereading Speedo?

Recommended Posts

Guest rich1977

was driving my mi the other night and was a little unimpressed with it tbh due to indicated speeds now it felt like it was pulling hard through all the gears all the way round to 7k-8k thing is at nearly 7k in fourth I was only showing around 75 mph and in 5th at around 6k was around 90.

now im sure the speedo is out as im used to my rovers and i know they what a ton+feels like and the pug seems to be pulling everybit as hard as they did if not quicker, the box is out of a 1.9 gti and I know the previous owner (mate of mine) used to run 14.7 quarters in her and 6.1 secs 0-60 on sprint tests but my indicated speed doesnt seem to reflect the true speed or acceleration of the car which when you live in nottingham which is speed camera central isnt a good thing.

so are the above speeds right or is it well out and if it is what could be causing it? I swapped the cable not long back for a 309 one when i broke the old cable when swapping the dials is it possible ive put the needle back in wrong position (did this with the fuel guage :) )

get a mate to drive alongside at certain fixed speeds and compare your readings to theirs.

If the needle is on wrong the difference will be the same at all speeds, if its drive related then you should find the differences increase the faster your moving.

Or pop a sat nav in for a while and take the readings. Mine is out after fitting a different box. It is down to the different worm and drive around the driveshaft / end of the speedo cable
