Measuring And Straightening Smashed Up Car

Recommended Posts

zilog

A friend of mine went off the road tail end first in my 205GTI -89 (1.9 litre). The suspension is pretty f***ed (the right rear wheel has somewhat 30 degrees camber.. and the brake disc split and came loose), but I want to know how to measure the position of all the tail suspension mounting points, the height of the mounts in respect to the rear beam (probably bent aswell since the beam seems to hang loose), and how to determine frame straightness using cross measurements between front and rear.

Is there anything else apart from the obvious as rear beam, mounts, swing arms, wheel bearing, brakes and wheels I need to look at after such a crash?

It will proberly be the stub axle, wheel and trailing arm that are bent. Have a look in the boot and look to see if the wheel has hit the inner arch then take the beam of and have a good look rear beam mounting points if they look o.k then stick another beam on and see how it drives.

What material is the swing arm axle (dont know the exact word due to being a bloody foreigner), the one that is inside the infamous needle bearings?

We are thinking of manufacturing one ourselves from steel, but need to know whether ordinary construction steel is good enough, and if the bearing surfaces need to be hardened or not.
