Bedding Pads In

Recommended Posts

crf450

I've just fitted new Brembo std replacement discs and new 1155's to my track car which is a combination I've used before without any problems, but after fitting these recently I did a track day and went straight out on track and didn't bed them in.

I haven't made a special effort to bed this combination in before but in the past I'd have fitted them and then driven the car to a track day, as I trailered the car this time I think going straight out and getting on the pace may have done some damage, I now have a vibration from the brakes under hard braking and they seem to be getting very hot easy and fading.

In an ideal world I know you'd just fit new discs and pads but at a cost of around £160 I don't feel to inclined to do this after shelling out on new anyway.

My plan is to grind the discs and mill a couple of mm off the pads and try them again. Has anyone had any experiences of reclaiming discs/pads that haven't been bedding in properly.

Cheers Martin

what thickness are your discs ? sounds like you have warped your discs already.

Of all the different pads and discs I've used I'm of the opinion it's 50% luck as to how they perform on track. I was always careful about bedding brakes in steadily with the big discs and various pads with mixed results, sometimes getting bad vibration on track - but I always remember you driving hard at Donington in your 205 without problems on standard discs with 1155s and finding it quite annoying :D

Now I just fit them and used them as and when. Any times I've had vibration problems I've had the discs skimmed and just rubber the pads abit with sand paper and refitted them.

I'm not sure if they really do go "bad" if you don't bed them it right, it's probably more the disc than the pad so I'd skim the discs and start again.

1155s do need bedding in properly as, like all pads (in my experience at least) they fade the first time they get hot. Whenever I fit new pads now I bed them in gently at first then give them a heat cycle - accelerating and braking repeatedly until they start to fade. Then let 'em cool and they're ready for action.

I read somewhere that warped brake discs are a myth (not sure whether I fully believe that), and that brake vibration / judder is caused by uneven pickup of pad material on the disc surface. In case that's true, it might be worth taking the discs off and scrubbing them with wire wool or a drill mounted wire wheel. Worth a try and cheaper than getting them reground.

Problem is if you've hammered them around a track like that all the high spots will have been converted into a much harder form of steel, in which case the judder is likely to come back, even after disc skimming.

I think the discs must be warped slightly to get the hum that I'm getting, I've opted for grinding them rather than turning them as you can take less off with a ring grinder, when you turn them you have to get under the skin to get a decent finish.

I've had a PM off a youth on the six forum that had the same experience as me using 1155's and he got in touch with the Mintex rep and they supplied him with a new set of pads, so that the avenue I'm exploring at the moment. Cheers for the input.
