sport1901966 8 Posted March 18, 2007 As above, loosing a fair bit of compression and I have a strong feeling the rings are shot. Any ideas on cost to replace, ideally looking for placed around Bromley/Wimbledon. Thanks guys

M@tt 77 Posted March 18, 2007 (edited) i'm sure you can get the parts a bit cheaper cheaper than than by not going to pug iirc when i rebuilt my mi16 i was quoted £75inc vat for OE quality parts by the people that did my engine work. I'm sure Mattsav or Miles will be able to tell the brands you want to be aiming for, and probably be able to supply them cheaper as they are in the trade. Are you planning on doing the work yourself? or getting someone to do it for you? you'll also want to factor into the cost getting your liners honed so that they seal really well with the new rings. costs about £20+vat but you'd proabably have to take the liners out as well to get a machine shop to do it and that's mean new liner seals as well. or you could buy one of those drill attachedmaents and do it DIY just some food for thought Edited March 18, 2007 by M@tt
Andrwn8304 0 Posted March 18, 2007 (edited) I would replace the liners aswell as you normally get a ridge on the liners/bores which would snap any new Ring on its compression stroke - AutoFive stocks these EM114 Piston ring set £62.95 EM116 Piston/ring/liner kit 1.6 £279.00 EM116B Piston and ring set 1.9 £189.00 EM116C Piston/ring/liner kit 1.9 £279.00 Edited March 18, 2007 by Andrwn8304
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted March 18, 2007 A hone normally does the trick to suit the Ring's, Ring's around £90.00 a set and honing the liner's if able to £35.00, Liner seals £12.51 then gasket's & Headbolt's on top of that and while the head's off the stem seals may aswell be done at the same time no need to get new liner's etc
sport1901966 8 Posted March 18, 2007 Interesting thoughts there cheers for the detailed responses! It'll probably be done by a garage. I'm actually asking for myself and my brother, both of us own 1.9 gti's with the same issue although I'm pretty certainly going down the MI16 route so this is more for his benefit. Thanks again, you are certainly a helpful lot!
