I changed the Speedo drive to the old one.

A mate tailed me up the road at 30 mph and seems to clocking the 30 mph ok gonna try at 60 & 70 over the weekend to be safe.

Other than slight drop in revs everything seems to be ok.

I've checked the E.P.C. on the gearing ratio's and they seem the same except for the BE1/5 with 1st gear is 12x39 from 1987 up to Mod 1991 and the BE3/5 up to April 1993 is 1st = 13x38 2nd = 20x37 3rd = 25x34 4th = 29x31 5th = 37x32

Hope this makes sense

When I got it they said it was from 1.6 Gti 1994 Reg.

Would it make much of a difference to the car if it is from 1.9 as performance wise it seems fairly reasonable with no significant power drop on acceleration or up through the gears.

they stopped making the 1.6 in 92 due to emissions laws so it was either 84 or youve been sold a 1.9 box, which sounds very much likely with the revs you've got at 70.

I come across scrappy's selling god know's what as all they know is a Peugeot box fits a 205>405 99% of the time and allot of car's have had a box change before in there life

But it does sound more like a 1.9 box

So what difference will the 1.9 box make as apposed to 1.6 box seems ok whilst driving doing 30 mph when it should be?

Longer ratios so you wont accelerate quite as quickly but wont be revving as high when at higher speeds.

I might get more mpg then lol especially with the cost of fuel these days the engine did seem to be screaming a little bit saying as it hits the Red line at 5000rpm it might take alot of the strain of the engine now.

Thx for the input guys

Not necessarily imo, the longer ratio's can put the engine under extra strain. Worse performance & mpg.

NOooooooooooooooo lol I've took the original gearbox back to the bloke who repaired the last time and hes gonna take a look at it.

To be totaly honest I'd rather keep the original box in the car as further reading through the forums and talks with Peugeot garages have lead me to believe the 1.6 boxes are getting like gold dust to get hold of plus I've told the original parts thats on the car helps to keep the value of it.
