Mot Fail For Coilovers

Recommended Posts

pip470

Have i got my coilovers fitted corectly, They are spax rsx and are wound to there lowest position but when the car is jacked up the spring becomes loose and its failed its mot on a lot of things but is this what coilovers do when jacked up. It says spring restraint not working. Should i just wind it up and raise the front end for the mot or im i doing somthing wrong, also I have standard wheels and its rubbing on the gearbox. Theres a tiny amount of play in the steering but i wouldnt of though it would of eqauted to the rubbing. Cheers Phill There 15" 1.9 alloys

I'm notr an expert in these cars but I would check that the track rod ends hve been screwed on evenly. It could be that the offside one was not screwed on as far as the nearside before tracking or whilst tracking. This would allow the rack to push the nearside wheel further round than it should. :P

This often happens with coilovers, i would wind the seat up till it reaches the spring and put a tiny amount of load on the spring with it jaced up just so the spring does not become free. As sutol said i would check the track rod ends are even but even that should not mean tyre rubs box. If you find track rods are basically even then just keep adjusting it unto wheel misses box then adjust it back after mot

it'll just touch the end of the box if its lowered and on 195's, mine used to clear the box with 185's and not lowered, but its not been picked up on 3 mot's now.

as for the springs you can fit helper springs.

Thanks for the advice, I now know the springs are fitted corectly so i will just take up the slack with the c collars and check the track rod ends. Great stuff only another 12 failures to work through. You got to love them.

Just had a daft idea I might just fit 2 1.6 alloys for the test and that should be problem solved.

Can you not fit a helper spring to the spax kit as these are designed to stop the main coil spring becoming loose when the shocks are at full extent ie jacked up

Probably but money is tight and i just want some mot and tax so i can drive it again. Its costing me a fortune.

you need helper springs to pass an MOT:

I've got Gaz coilovers on mine and not had any problems with MOT.

However it did fail on the tyres rubbing on the inner arch and gearbox like yours.

Garage actually recommend as you said, putting smaller wheels on just for MOT then swapping back, especially as mine is a track day and hardly ever goes on full lock.

But I've got 307 brakes so 1.6 wheels isn't an option. So I just brought some 5mm spacers put them on for MOT and then took them off as soon as I got back. :)

Cheers

Adam
