I would say its more to do with the bottom end. A lighten a balance, lighter flywheel, arp bolts, tuffened crank and of course take the limiter off the ecu (if your running an ecu that is)

You can do all the headwork you want but if your bottom end aint up to it its pointless.

The bottom end can rev to over 7k easily, though upgrading it goes without saying.

It doesn't rev high because it can't get the air through. A high revving 1.9 is an mi16!

i was advised by des developments to not use a 1.9gti 8v crank over 7rpm without getting it fully counter balanced

i can get mine to the better side of 6500rpm (on carbs) but peak power is at 6 so its a bit pointless...

yes as far as i'm aware it's all about flow; without this it can't flow enouigh at high revs. Once you can get it to flow over 7k, you need a bottom end to match.
