205 Cti ... Really Heavy Steering

Recommended Posts

Guest Stomper

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone could help me with my girlfriends 205 cti.

Its a 1989 f

The steering seems really heavy ..... i used to have a 205 gti and i cant remember it being as heavy as this one ... and mine had 1.9 wheels on it.

I want to get the same wheels for thsi but surely taht willl only make the steering heavier.... and i think the gf will struggle now .

Is there anything i can check as i'm sure it can't be normal.

Ta

Gav

Either the U/J on the lower coloum or the coloum to rack which can lock up over time or lastly the rack might be faulty

Jack the front of the car up and see what it's like

Universal Joint, The steering coloum goes thru 2 of them before getting to the rack

They are easy to replace, But expensive new so worth taking them both off and see if they move freely with out any play in the joint thou

Could also be the suspension top mount bearings - changing mine made a huge difference to the steering weight.
