Craigb 2 Posted March 12, 2007 What are the symptoms of a bent rear stub axle , and how do you measure it . My car has a strange quirk , that i think may be down to the stub axle. On left hand bends its quite neutral , good turn in due to the added caster etc . But on right handers it has additional turn in , it not vicious or any thing , and is very predictable . so probably not bush related . Just something that i would like not to have to think about mid section . Any ideas anyone
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 12, 2007 Is the additional turn in caused by an ovalled balljoint hub hole? Sounds like one of mine did when I had this or a spit rear beam rubber mount which I put down to a bent stub axle but I'd guess you have solid ones fitted which will count that out of the equation. Not sure how to check without removing the suspected one & comparing it to a straight one although would the wheel bearing show if its bent? (tighter than normal) Graham. I'm using the adjustable PTS wishbones up front , so the ovality of the hub is taken out of the equation as is the rear mounts which are solid as you surmised. it definaly feels rear related though
Rob Thomson 6 Posted March 12, 2007 Can't you just stick it on a 4-wheel chassis alignment thingy? Surely that would show any mis-alignment of the rear wheels.
taylorspug 7 Posted March 12, 2007 Either as Rob says, or string the car up using 4 axle stands and some fishing line and measure the toe readings on all 4 wheels from this.
Craigb 2 Posted March 13, 2007 Its getting tracked up Saturday morning , so we'll see what the alignment people make of it
Craigb 2 Posted April 3, 2007 Having started this thread with the statement that i didn't think it was bush related, how wrong can you be? I had the car 4 wheel aligned , which showed nothing untoward . so i started the pre event spanner check , at which point i noticed that on a previous event i had replaced a std wishbone bush with a poly bush . Because i didn't have a std one lying around at the time . As this was the only none std part on otherwise a known good front end , i replaced it and hey presto , all the unwanted oversteer disappears . as far as i'm concerned . i will never fit a poly one again . They be the work of the devil do they !!
