All Praise The GTI 3 Posted March 12, 2007 hi everyone i could do with some urgent help please the other day i noticed after a drive my battery was very hot and venting gas, the indicator went clear=battery killed! so i got new battery and charged then fitted the next day. that evening i noticed it had done the same again and this time blew out the spare plug for breather and acid leaking from terminals and battery walls bulging!!! not sure if related but a few days prior the alternator belt was sqealing so i tightened it, have made looser now but that wouldnt cause to overcharge i dont think. is it the regulator??? i dont want me beloved gti to blow up!!!!!! any help mech appreciated
pugbliss 0 Posted March 12, 2007 i am by no way a mechanical genius but i would say along the lines of your alternator is over charging!!!!! i would get it tested or test it yourself! not sure if it is the problem but its a start.
Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted March 12, 2007 sounds like the regulator in the alternator is knackered. I believe halfrauds can do a free test as canm AA etc but a simple mutlimeter will do the job if you have one, check voltage and amps with car running. jim21070 2 Posted March 12, 2007 As Ritchie says, Measure volts across the battery with the engine running at about 2000rpm. Anything in excess of 14.4V means the alternator is faulty. If your battery is really fizzing then you'll most likely find it much higher. It is very difficult to make a quick check of charging current and due to the nature of a lead-acid battery, a simple voltage check is completely adequate.
