Bonnet Release

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

The bonnet release cable is disconnected from my pug.

I did a search and found if i jacked the car up and reached in, i could have pulled the cable from the slam panel area. I did this to find that the cable has actually disconnected from latch!!!

How do i get the bonnet to open without this cable working the latch?

With great difficulty I should imagine.

Anyway you can re-attach the cable end to the latch and give it a tug with

some mole grips?

Or go in the front way, with two big screw drivers!

Just had the bonnet catch off mine to clean up & lubricate. The cable goes into an 8mm bolt loosely rivetted to the catch lever. This was rusted solid on mine, so freed it off & oiled it. So, when you reach up and feel the underside of the catch, you need to feel for a small nut. If it hasn't dropped out, there is a tiny 7mm bolt screwed into the nut, which screws down on the cable. You will need to pull this towards the nearside and your bonnet should open. It might be quite hard to move, if so, get someone to press down, or even sit on the bonnet above the catch to relieve the pressure of the spring.

Not sure how much room you will have for reaching up ... if you can't move it with the above method, you could try feeding the cable through the hole in the 8mm nut and clamping the end of the cable with small mole grips as near to the offside of the nut as possible, then try operating the bonnet release handle.
