jim21070 2 Posted March 10, 2007 I did my timing belt and today and lo and behold, the timing hole in the crank pulley does not line up with the datum on the block. It is a country mile off. A common occurrance I'm led to believe. Only PSA could have designed a crank pulley with the timing hole on the outer annulus of a rubber bonded pulley Pure unadulterated muppetry. In the event I replaced my belt using marks on sprockets and belts. Because of this, I'm not convinced the timing is right and I'd like to check it. Long, long ago on this forum I recall a long and detailed post speaking of this and showing a set of pictures and diagrams of XU10 crank pulleys showing the relationship between the woodruff key slot and the timing hole as an aid to determining how knackered the pulley was. I have been searching high and low for this post all evening and its doing my head in. I can't find it Can anyone please help Is there any alternative way of accurately timing the engine? BuD 0 Posted March 10, 2007 (edited) I believe you could buy or a new bottom pulley and this will be correct and the timing holes should line up - lock the flywhell when you change it over. I havent done this myself yet although am planning on changing the belt on a gti6 engine I am going to put in a 205 and am going to renew the bottom pully (altho the holes line up on this one still) because they seem to fail like you mention, lots of posts on the gti6 forum about this. Miles 331 1 Cars Posted March 10, 2007 Very common and if it's spun around it's on it's way to self destruction with the rubber falling out all-together so it's not a bad thing to replace them, but pulley's are around £65.00. I;ve replaced my V6's and GTi6 with new ones. But to check the timing if you have one to hand is use a old 8v bottom pulley.

I have an old solid 8V one from an old 1.6GTi engine and it works a treat! A new market has opened up: Get a load of old 8V pulleys and sell them as timing aids Many, many thanks!!
