matty_gti 20 Posted March 10, 2007 hi all, ive just bought a 1992 1.6 GTi and theres one or two things i cant quit put my finger on. When driving at about 30+ and i so happen to hit a little bump of go over somthing in the road the car will suddenly and sharply dive to the left or right and then back again with a loud clonk!, taking my hands on the wheel with it. I have to try my best to keep it in a straight line!!. It allso really clunks n pulls the steering when doing 60 in 5th and i push the pedal to the floor the car will sharply pull to the left/right while theres me trying to keep it straight!, it allso does this when letting off the throttle at these speeds. Also....i can have the car on full lock to one side and slowly reverse, it will make one clonk and then an even louder clonk about 2 seconds after that while still reversing as if somthing is buckaling!. Any ideas as id really like it sorted so i can drive it.....Saftly!!! ThAnKs
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted March 10, 2007 That must be either knackered wishbones or a knackered steering rack. Sounds scary and will most certainly fail an MOT I guess

matty_gti 20 Posted March 11, 2007 yes something definately sounds worn out, best get that checked asap Yeah, i was thinking of taking it to a garage but thats when they try and rip u off!, so if i can can do it my self then i will. I was just wondering if any one had more of a deffinate answer . I dont think its the rack because theres no play in it, i think its somthing else that 'pops' or 'clonks' or somthing and moves therefore quickly snapping the car to one side?? ANDYMISIXTEEN 0 Posted March 11, 2007 Its probably the wishbones, sounds exactly how my old Gti was when they were fubard. Jack the front wheels up and move them left to right and feel for any play.
Andrwn8304 0 Posted March 11, 2007 (edited) I had a similar problem, mine used to pull to the left turned out it was the rear bushes on the Wishbones. After replacing the bushes which lasted about 3 month it developed a knocking and a pull again, done the usual checks for the ball joints with no play I ruled them out, then a few weeks later after being really peeeed with it I removed the wishbones only to find the nylon cap that sits below the ball joint below the rubber boot on the ball joint had snapped. Best to replace to replace the wishbones m8 I got mine from Euro Car Parts. Edited March 11, 2007 by Andrwn8304

I removed the two front wheels and then noticed the front bushes looking a little old. When i wiggled the wish bones i could actually pull the front of the wishbone on the d.side about a 1 cm towads me and back again. i then checked the pass.side and it isnt as bad. Now....is this a job of removing the w.bones, sticking new bushes in or replacing both complete w.bones?? Thanks for the help!!
travill 0 Posted March 11, 2007 (edited) If the ball joints are ok which they usually are then just pop down to your friendly peugeot dealer armed with this number 3599 07 only about £15 plus Vat. This has 4 bushes enough to do both sides and some new bolts and washers. Take these and your old wishbones to a local garage and i'm sure they will press the old ones out and new ones in for a little cash. Job done P.s tighten the bolts up with the weight on the wheels as it does make a difference. Edited March 11, 2007 by travill

Andrwn8304 0 Posted March 12, 2007 Thats all I did just use the old bush (Outer Sleeve) as a wacking tool saves you burring the edges over on the new bushes.
