Picking Up A New Beam, Things To Look For

Recommended Posts

jtek

Hi everyone, the beam on my GTI is on its last legs and i have managed to source another one. I am told it is in good condition, but its on the other side of the country near to a friend of mine who will be picking it up for me.with the beam off the car, is any ways of telling the condition of the beam bearings etc, without taking it apart? My friend is very mechanically minded so will have no problem checking it, but i just wandered if you have any advise of symptoms of a beam in bad condition? thanx

Look to see if their is any camber. Then with the beam on the floor stand on the trailing arm bit to see if they move easily...

..and thats not a sure fire way. I personally dont know of any other method of telling straight off. But then maybe some of the more experienced members on here do?

if there is no shocks on it, turn it upside down so that the trailing arms are in the air, then give them a press down and reselase quickly, to see if the bounce. Don't know if that makes sense, but if the bearings are good then the trailing arm will bounce up and down like a spring, wheareas if they are shot or stiff, the trailing arm won't bounce.

Thats the way I've always done it if I can't take it apart

and to add, where the trailing arm goes into the beam tube in this pic:

here

the trailing arm should go into the tube totaly parallel and the seal should look intact and sealing well through 360deg.

all good indications listed above , but its still hard to tell off the car .if theres no record of it being done recently you would be stupid not to strip it down to inspect anyway.

Thanks for the advice guys, my friend got the beam today, luckily it hadn't been taken off of the car when he got there so he could see it in action, and it looks good, no camber, smooth operation etc.
