Gear Selection Got Very Stiff Suddenly

Recommended Posts

kenp

Being probably the only original major mechanical component left on the car, the gearbox on our red Pug seems to have developed a fault. It's done 166k now so I guess it's done well...

Symptoms: car cold, gear selection is fine but once the car is warmed up the selection is very stiff for all gears (no crunching like a synchro prob or anything just very stiff). It does (so far) always select though.

I'm trying to figure out what might be wrong before I have to swap the box out. Clutch is fine as is adjustment, box has oil in (I know this as i've just topped it up after swapping a driveshaft).

Any ideas? - I'm at a but of a loss, in the past all the selection probs I've come across have been the exact opposite of this - e.g bad when cold and better when hot.

the pivot arm on the subframe needs regreasing, heat from the exhaust makes it worse.

my first 205 had this fault, the seller thought it had a knackered gearbox but kept quiet, luckily I had the last laugh. that was on 160 odd thousand at the time too.

Just out of curiousity how did you cure the prob on the opposite? mines hard to select 1st and 2nd when cold.

You are a star mate :)

Spot on - that was the problem. I really wasn't looking forward to taking the box out in situ (hate that job)

Buy you a pint if you are ever down this part of the world :D

Andrwn8304: My cold selection probs were caused by the wrong grade of oil (75/90 instead of 75/80).
