Throttle Position Sensor - Switch Or Pot?

Recommended Posts

Scottieb

Hi all,

I have read in various places that the TPS sensor on on a standard 1.9 GTI is a switch that shows when the throttle is either fully open or fully closed. is this the case or is it a variable resistor?

Regards,

Scott

It's three position switch. Closed thottle, wide open throttle and in between.

I discovered that the plug had fallen off the TPS before my first event with the new engine (started for the first time the day before the event). What position does the ECU see with no connection to the TPS and how much is this likely to affect power? Would this account for a high idle (1900 rpm) which would lead me to think the ECU sees an inbetween setting by default?

inbetween setting by default from what I know. If its unplugged the only real issues you will see is over fueling at idle which is not enough for a high idle, its more air related when you get a high idle. Also unplugged it wont know when you are at WOT so it may run a little lean. Over run gets a bit more poppy with it unplugged due to excess fuel as well.
