Rear Beam Question

Recommended Posts

m5nut

My suspension is compressing/rebounding fine, the car sits level to the road, there's no creaking and no handling issues at speed.

BUT the offside tyre is very close to the inner wing (hardly get your hand between) whereas the nearside has plenty of space :( Would this suggest that it's the stub axle that's bent or definetly the trailing arm shaft/bearing? I haven't jacked it up yet to check for anything untoward, so here's hoping.

Is this clearance issue an MOT fail, if all else is good?

Thanks in advance

Bob

Could be a bent stub axle, hard to tell without having your own and a known straight one to compare. You could take a quick look at the four mounting nuts on the forward side of the axle where they bolt to the shell to see if it's been damaged in that area or if the bolts aren't sitting central to the shell/car

My 205 had the same problem, i just mot'ed it and thats what it failed on. turned out thats the bearings had collapsed in that side. Had to get a new rear beam.

Thanks

Like DTORU mentions, the beam normally fails on the drivers side first.

They only have a finite lifespan, though you can increase this by stripping and regreasing them regularly, and then replacing the bearings when required.

Unfortunately, most of them just do high miles and become scrap.

My beam is fubar'd on the drivers side as well. The tyre has rubbed on the inner arch slightly. I jacked the rear up and the top of the wheel can be moved toward the arch whilst lifting. Doesn't do it on the passenger side. Time to rip it off and hope that its salvageable with just new bearings and seals.
