Grim.Badger 15 Posted March 4, 2007 I've just bought a new water pump and unfortunately it wont fit into its hole; the vanes of the pump foul badly on the block to the extent that if you drop the pump into place there is a 1mm gap between the block and the pump housing. It isn't even a cheap pump as I decided to get one through a well respected company. I've tried fitting it on both of my engines, and I've re-fitted my old pump to see if I'm doing something wrong but I don't seem to be. Has anyone else come across this? Am I being thick and forgetting something?
Grim.Badger 15 Posted March 4, 2007 gasket? Yes that's with the gasket, it's even worse without it.
Mikey S 29 1 Cars Posted March 4, 2007 (edited) are you sure its the right pump? ie does it physically look the same? its not unheard of a parts monkey picking the wrong one off the shelf i usually get mine from gsf (airtex i think) and they always fit perfect. Anthony 1,003 Posted March 4, 2007 Sounds like you've got a diesel waterpump, as that whilst looking very similar to the GTi one, has a larger impeller and fouls the block. Had exactly the same issue myself before now when the parts guy muddled 1.9 petrol with 1.9 diesel. Take it back and get the correct one
GLPoomobile 958 Posted March 4, 2007 You've got me paranoid now! I bought a pump from Neat a few weeks ago. Whilst I trust those guys, since I don't know when I'll get around to fitting it, it would be nice to know I have the right one. It's an Airtex, part number on the box is 1135, and on the casting it is 101.113501
jim21070 2 Posted March 5, 2007 Yep, that is diesel one (or more specifically, one for an iron block XU). It's a very easy mistake to make, especially as the ally block waterpump (the one you need) will fit any XU block although using an ally block one in an iron blocked engine is not the best idea. I fell into the same trap a while ago and on a Saturday afternoon too. My only route was to be absolutely shafted for one at our local factors
GLPoomobile 958 Posted March 5, 2007 Jim Was the above reply meant for me, in relation to the part number I posted, or was it in response to Grim Badger?
jim21070 2 Posted March 5, 2007 Ahh, sorry Mr Poo! The dangers of posting whilst still half awake and munching a bowl of Jordans finest... The Airtex Diesel one is 1310 (cross references to GSF N17010) so I would guess the 1135 is the right one for the ally block engine. Have a check of the impeller diamater. the Diesel (iron block) one is 68mm. The ally one will be a good bit less than this. I keep on telling myself to read and reply to posts more carefully but the message fails to get through every time. Sorry
