gtimon 0 Posted March 4, 2007 Before I start with my main question. I presume that under-steer is when you turn the steering more into the corner to get around and over-steer is when you turn the steering away from the corner. Yes ? Anyway I'm getting ready for some track days, but without saying what set-up my 1.9gti has and having read the 'pinned topic about suspension setting' which I found tobe good, but my brain is muddled with the various info. My biggest problem is what I would call a power slide, when exiting a corner I cannot put the power on without it sliding out at the front. I found if I have higher tyre pressures at the front than the rear (as STD), its worse. But if the rears are higher than the fronts (26f & 30r), its better. So basically how can I improve this in laymans terms, ie: stiffer rear TB or ARB, solid rear end bushing or what?? One thing I don't seem to suffer too much of, is the lift-off tail swinging. Also I might try some tarmac rallying at local club events for some fun. Thanks
hengti 2 Posted March 4, 2007 are you sure that there's not a problem with the car or that you're not just entering the corners too quickly? i don't think the standard car (for what it is) understeers that badly on track and don't think the lift off oversteer is that pronounced either what is the set-up on your car? i think stiffening the rear bushes is actually supposed to decrease oversteer, so that probably wouldn't help ps. found this on youtube; might be interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn3kaLpeon8
Doof 11 Posted March 4, 2007 Powersliding is the term used for 4wd and rwd cars as sliding is really the sideways motion which you will obviously get with a heavy right foot coming out of corners. In a front wheel drive cars its just called understeer, where the car wants to go straight on. In terms of what you can do to stop it, well there isn't really much. Basically even if you went for an LSD and altered the suspension to increase the grip at the front you would still get understeer with too much power and / or too higher entry speed into a corner...its just the understeering would happen at a slightly higher speed. Basically no matter what, you will find yourself understeering in FWD and having to be careful on the throttle.
gtimon 0 Posted March 4, 2007 As far as I'm told when I brought the car. It has std. 1.9 GTI Springs, TB & ARB's, but has 309 TC arms & Koni yellow rear shocks. Not sure whether it has solid beam mounts or not. As for the under/oversteer problem, it has no problems entering or actual cornering as its quite neutral, as I said, its not tail happy with the throttle lift off. But I can not put any amount of power down exiting a corner without the understeer, so much so that my mates 320 beamer can leave me for dust. But then catch it up when on the straight. Henry 1.9GTi 36 Posted March 5, 2007 sounds same as my car in standard form, I now use a lowered suspension kit and a 25mm rear arb among other things. Can now corner without having to use insane amounts of lock on the exit. Solid beam mounts helped settle the rear but you still get lift off oversteer like any FWD which is good. Would recomend a -30mm drop and a bigger rear ARB. Maybe consider stiffer but standard height if your going tarmac rallying. good luck.
brianthemagical 1 Posted March 5, 2007 what are your front tyres like? what are they? ultimately the grip comes form them so make sure there good first. would a stiff front not make it worse? which beemer is it? my makes 320 (e30) is like a barge, that leans alot, but is minty smooth to drive.
