1.9 Gti Wont Run Again

RANT ON Yet AGAIN the pug has let me down. It's now the second time in 2 weeks that this has left me stranded in the dark and rain 30 miles from home. This has got to be the most unreliable car I have ever had the missfortune of owning and becoming a money pit that I can't enjoy driving through fear of breaking down. RANT OFF Sorry for being rather blunt but this car is doing my head in. I have only had one journey in it without any incidents and it's starting to get to me. Previously I have checked all the usual stuff, cleaned breathers, checked and adjusted throttle position switch, checked/adjusted afm, cleaned intake, adjusted Co idle and ignition timing, and was starting on the button and running very well after this.

Yesterday I fitted a clutch, replace ignition leads and spark plugs. (The cause of the last breakdown.) Started on the button as usual left it idling and then it started hunting the stalled. It would restart but wouldn't idle. I left it for a while while I cleaned up. Started fine but about a mile down the road started kangarooing almost like the fuel was being switched on and off even on full throttle and fairly high revs. I reached a round about where it cut out in the right hand lane (Which is not ideal) and wouldn't restart. It doesn't even attempt to fire. Managed to get towed to a nearby carpark where it sat for about 2 hours. Went back to tow it home and still nothing. It is now at home and still doesn't attempt to start. I'm thinking it may not be anything I have done as it has run since (although brief). I,m thinking SAD as it is about the only thing I haven't checked. Does this seem plausable??? :)

No, it won't be the SAD. That just increases the idle speed when the engine's cold...

Sounds like an ignition problem to me. Possibly coil or ignition amp.

Persevere - it'll be worth it in the end.

hi

ive had both these problems before and both times it pointed to the dizzy, mine was kangerooing because the dizzy had come loose, as soon as i tightened it it was fine. also when mine wouldnt start it was because there was a faulty connection between the coil that sits on the inlet manifold and dizzy.

regards

darren

Cheers guys, I've just checked the spark. Nothing at spark plug and nothing out of coil. I have 1.44kohm resistance through king lead. Does this sound right??? I have ignition feed at coil but how do I check the ignition amp??

I've checked the coil. 7kohms through each coil. I have 12v supply to ignition amp, I have an earth there and contiuity to the coil. I've checked the dizzy pick up at 22hz so looks like ignition amp is at fault unless someone finds fault with my figures. Can this stripped and repaired or where is best to get a new one??

As you've just changed the clutch, double check the earths to the top of the gearbox and the connection to the imfamous ecu temp sender

I have checked the earths on top of the gearbox which are good and tight. Where do I find the ecu temp sensor?

It certainly sounds electrical. The temp sender is a blue plug underneath the dizzy.

temp sensor would just over fuel, you would still have spark.
