Crunching And Stiff 1st And 2nd Gears

Recommended Posts

I had the Gearbox overhauled a few months ago due to the crunching and grinding in to 3rd and 4th gears turned out the 3rd and 4th hub was shagged common problem apparently as so many people have had the same problem on here.

When I picked the up 1st and 2nd seemed a stiff, after a few weeks the 1st and 2nd gears started to grind and notch into gears when it was cold when I selected them but I put it in down to the Gearbox being stripped down and needed settling in again.

The strange thing is once its warmed to normal temperature I can get the gears with ease I was told they'd put semi synthetic oil in when I picked the car up. So I've drained the oil and replaced it with the good old Hypoid oil EP75/80. Haynes says 1.8 Ltr I removed 3 Ltr's.

Just on curiosity the 3rd and 4th Hub went about 3 weeks after I put a clutch in but it came at a bad time near Xmas so just to get the car back on the road I opted for the cheap fix.

I was goin to get a Borg and Beck clutch and sugestions on a good clutch would be appreciated?

Any ideas on this problem seems ok if I press the clutch and wait before changing the gears now and again the clutch pedal seems stiff or if I push the gearstick hard to the left and then select 1st or 2nd it selects them 99.9% of the time easily it also seems to grind more if I go for a quick change from 1st to 2nd.

Before stripping anything down, I'd check your clutch cable adjustment first. Poor adjustment often leads to engagement problems with lower gears.

Pedal is adjusted to above the brake pedal Bite spot is level with the brake to allow for the clutch plate to release

Just checked the rear engine mountings this morning only to find the small Bush that mounts to sub-frame is shagged the rubber isnt attached to metal insert anymore, could this cause the problem I origanly posted?
