Jer309GTi 3 Posted March 4, 2007 Sometimes when pulling away in the Mi, you can smell what can only be descibed as the smell when oil gets onto the exhaust and burns off. Thing is there are no oil leaks on the engine There is no smoke from the exhaust, and the smell definately comes from under the bonnet. It doesn't do it all the time, and usually when pulling away when the engine hasn't warmed up fully. The only thing I can think it could be is there is a leak on the breather system somewhere and I can smell the fumes, but surely it would do it all the time, and be worse when warmed up? There is no gauze in the filler cap, would this cause my symptoms?
jim21070 2 Posted March 4, 2007 All XU and XUD equipped cars I have ever owned have displayed this from time to time. I have never found any reason and put it down to the breater system somehow venting the smell, back out through the air filter perhaps? The breather system does, on occasions, dump plenty of oil fumes into the inlet tract Nothing to worry about.

Guest badboyracer3500 Posted March 4, 2007 Thanks very much Jim, you've put my mind at rest! I got this with leak on my cam cover and oil was burnin on exhaust manifold. hense only on start up, when warmed up it seals itself as metal expands.
