Standard Air Filters - Part Numbers

Recommended Posts

Wildebeest

I've got an H (May 91) 1.6 Gti and just got hold of a new air filter from my local dealer(employee disc :( )

Just wondering if there are two types? The one I've got with part no 144596 is too long for the casing by about 1 1/2" and about 1/2" narrower than the previous one.

The construction also seems to be diferent as the old one is foam, this is standard paper.

Try this

I always thought they were foam, also thought that there was rarely a need to buy a new one as you clean them and reoil them.

Thanks, but the catalogue gives the same part number. I was wondering if the air filter type changed on the phase change? There is some writing on top of the metal cannister which I will post once it gets light tomorrow. Will try to get a photo too as that may help.

Sounds ridiculous I know - but have you actually tried to get the filter inside the housing?

I only ask this because I run a 91 1.6 and bought a Motaquip filter a few months back. When I started to fit it I held it up to the housing but it looked too big - however on removing all the air pipes and cover for the housing the filter slotted in nice and tight (and I did not look like a d*ck in front of my entire FE College Vehicle maintenance night class). I did 1500 miles on it with no problems but replaced it last week for a K&N element (cheap on ebay) which makes it just that little bit throatier at 3000rpm!

Just to add, there are two sizes of air filter housings. I know this because some idiot at halfords gave me a short fat foam filter. My motaquip and K&N are both 241mm long by 75mm internal diameter.

It could be that both our cars have earlier filter housings on them - as these tend to rust at the bottom bracket and hence get replaced. However I think it unlikely that this is the case.

Looks a lot like mine - too dark to go outside and have a look. Remember the filter will fit between the two slightly elongated bits at either end. Measure the approximate distance between them to see what size it is. If its the same as the figure I quoted in my previous post then bobs your uncle.

The end cap had been depressed in by about 2 cm, so the elongated section of outlet pipe was flush with the bolt holes, hence the filter not fitting correctly. This didn't matter on the foam filter as the end was flush with the widest part of the cannister. Removed the cap and persuaded it back out and the new one fits perfectly.

Car sounds a lot lot better now, the old one was choked - last changed 20k ago by the previous owner. I have all the service history, down to lightbulbs, so I reckon it's correct. Next stop is the mixture setting now it's breathing better.

Good work. Glad to hear it all fits back. Remember if you think it's all sounding a bit quiet then you could always smuggle in a K&N or Green Cotton Filter! The 205 is just a never ending money roller coaster but on a dry empty B road it's all worth it. Next stop - OE wishbone bushes.

aha!! that explains the rather odd sized filters I have in my bag of VERY cheap stuff from a dealer :)

(aha!! that explains the rather odd sized filters) I have in my bag of VERY cheap stuff from a dealer ;)

If we remove the first few words from that sentence, then we get something that sounds VERY dodgey welshpug!

What kind of dealer gives you a bag of VERY cheap stuff, eh? How do you know they're not horse tranquilisers? ;)

How exactly did you manage to persuade a Pug dealer to throw a whole lot of parts in a bag? How much did you pay? What did you get?
