Rear Beam Arb Lever Arms

Bought a 1.9 beam at the weekend that was refurbished some time ago, so before fitting to the car decided to remove the shafts for a quick look to check the condition. To my suprise they were spotlessly clean and more importantly no rust on the bearings or inside the tube. Put it back together with a large amount of grease down the tube and set the ride height at 310mm by rotating the torsion bars.

All going well upto now.

Here's the stupid bit - attached one end of the ARB lever in position (already slid on the end of the bar)

and screwed the 8mm bolt in which lined up fine. At the other end however the 8mm bolt does not exactly line up with the hole whichever 2 teeth you use. The lever needs some pressure applied to it to line up with the hole. It will go in but when measuring the centres for the ride height again one side has altered by about 3mm.

Is this normal or am I missing something here :lol:

sounds like one arm needs its ride height adjusting slightly.

You are supposed to reconnect the arb with the car on stands & the shocks disconnected.

 

I had the same on mine when I re-fitted it both times after adjusting the ride height. Some just fit straight on & some need the radius arm moving slightly to get them inline.

Thanks Pugtorque, I have got the shocks off at the moment so I'll connect these levers as they are.

I took one shaft out at a time as in the lowering guide and I'm sure there was some tension on

the lever arms when I dismantled one side at a time. It's as if you need an extra spline between the two

splines to line up with the 8mm bolt hole if you see what I mean.

Pretty much all the beams i see do this, even with the ride height spot on the same both sides. Its nothing to worry about, get it as close as you can then get lever the arm down and screw the bolt in.

Thanks fellas - I think it was the lowering guide that threw me as it says the holes should line

up and the 8mm bolt goes straight in.

 

Just as a note I dismantled a beam last year that was'nt seized and it took me hours to strip it as one side was an absolute b-----d to come out.

The shaft actually stayed in the beam and the trailing arm actually come off the shaft :)

 

This beam however took me minutes and the shafts come out so easy as per described in the lowering guide

- needless to say this ones put back together with plenty of grease and copaslip :(

That beam sounds pretty seized to me, the radius arm shaft should come out very easily if it wasn't.

 

Certainly far easier than th force required to knock the arm off the shaft.
