1993 1.9 Gti Power Steering Seems Heavy?

Recommended Posts

Ello.

I've done a search of other threads and can't find this particular problem covered. I've just got a 1993 1.9 GTi. Its my third 1.9 but my first to have power steering. Thing is, the steering seems quite heavy when manouvering, not much of an improvement over manual steering?

I can't decide if it is just me, or whether it is heavier than it should be? The pump is working and the fluid level is fine, and it is on standard 1.9 alloys.

Can any of you with PAS tell me what yours feels like?

Cheers!

I have PAS on my STDT & its not that much lighter than my GTi without PAS.

My 205 D Junior has PAS and this, compared to my GTi (non-PAS) is incredibly light at parking speeds but then again the Junior has very skinny tyres on it. My od 205GRD without PAS was in no way heavy steering either.

My old 405 had PAS and that always seemed on the heavy side to me, especially when compared with the 205GTi and the Xantia. I knew all was tickity-boo with it because I replaced the ram after it became leaky.

The common factor here seems to be wide tyres.

Mine just does not seem much lighter when manouvering, than either of my 2 previous 1.9's that were non PAS. When driving along it is fine, feels just right to me.

Unfortunately, I have not got another car to compare it to. I'll have to investigate it further but for PAS it seems pretty naff!

The PAS on GTIs especially really isnt that much different, as Tom said i only noticed it in the one i drove when i jumped back in my car without PAS. :)

i remember when i changed the rack/replaced split hoses on my 309 i connected a couple of hoses the wrong way round and there was none/very little pas . for the life of me i cant remember which two . possibly the two into the rack itself . i do vaguely remember its the only two that can be mixed up.

The first time I drove the car after having PAS fitted I found it a bit light compmared with before. It has either become a bit stiffer now or I am used to it. I know my pump sometimes makes winning noises if you stall the engine and restart it so it could be heavy because of a sticky pump but that suits me fine :)

Hi there.

My 205 1.9 GTI has PAS on it from factory and i find just right: Light enough for parking and good feedback while driving. I've driven other GTI's with PAS and they all feel the same....
