Gti6 Block And S16 Block...differences?

Recommended Posts

maxi

Has anybody ever compared the s16 block to a GTi6 one??? Basically I am going to fit a gti6 head to my block and wondered whether there is something I have overlooked????

Any input welcome as long as it is based on experience.

From a quick glance the blocks look very similar and I don't foresee any problems mixing and matching - the oil return is different at the crankcase end and possibly less restrictive, and there's a few other minor casting differences that I could see, but nothing that looked like it was going to cause problems (I was going to do the opposite to you - use a GTi-6 block on my S16 engine as the S16 block was excessively worn)

Mattsav should still have my GTi-6 block kicking about at QEP somewhere if you want to pop in and have a look for yourself, as I admit that it was many months ago that I did a side-by-side comparison of the two so there might have been something that I've forgotten.

I've got an unused GTi-6 headgasket if thats any use for comparison. I decided against using it when the head was last off the car due to some differences that I can't remember (possibly water or oil ways).

The front and rear dipstick hole, The Oil breather hole's are different (Plus breather/filler tube into the sump) but the basic block has all the holes there just which one's are used vary or have different fitting's, even the 8v Turbo engine is basically the same.

I think the oil ways are a direct match but my S16 block is away to check at the moment.

yeah...all bottom ends are the basically the same. oil and waterways all line up between XU engine. Mix 'n match is no problem.

Why bother with the GTI-6 head? Is the thinking this head flows better than the S16? I'm sure Puma wasn't convinced the head was mcuh better recently.

Why not look at increasing the CC further to something like what Sandy/Colin did? Obviously they used some other trick parts which they are rightly keeping quiet about...
