Hydraulic Handbrake Idea For My Off Roader

Recommended Posts

PsychoSimon

Hi all,

Before my crash I used to do off roading, and plan to return now I'm out of hospital.

Hopefully in the near future myself and dad will be sorting out some hand controls for the accelerator and brake, and also the clutch.

Thing is, i'm not gonna be able to do the "handbrakeless hillstart" that lada niva owners have to learn with the heel and toe method, caused by the completely shonky handbrake system on the russian rust bucket lol.

This means I'm gonna HAVE to sort out a reliable handbrake.

My idea is to effectively take off the brake fluid resevoir, and run the inlet through to a hydraulic handbrake as used by the rally boys ( example here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HYDRAULIC-FLY-OFF-HA...1QQcmdZViewItem )

and then having the resevoir on the handbrake inside the car, and hopefully using the principal of an easy bleed to push the fluid through the main master cylinder and actuate all four wheels with my hydraulic handbrake.

Setup would be like this:

resevoir -> handbrake master cylinder -> footbrake master cylinder -> brakes

my main question is, I know the fluid will flow through the master cylinder to the brakes (as per easy bleed), but I am unsure whether the fluid will happily flow backwards through the system to release the brakes again????

anybody had any experiences with such a setup or am I going to be shot down for a stupid suggestion? (lol)

Thoughts welcome guys,

Regards,

Simon

Can't help you on the question but just wanted to say it's good to hear you are out of hospital and already looking at getting back in the driving seat. Nice going fella :-)

Hi mate,

Thanks ;) its really good to be out. Got properly discharged on friday, a and I don't know if my thanks found their way back to you for the card you sent, but it was much appreciated mate cheers.

I'm gonna be back behind the driving seat pretty quick, just not driving like a loon like before. proper sh*t myself up now thinking about things that I've got away with before in the car. never again.

But as I've been saying, I'd rather be in the wheelchair than a coffin.
