Mi16 Noob Needs Help

Recommended Posts

adrian_gti

hey guys,

the local scrappy has a 1.9 and the 2.0 engine there and ready to sell.

I've tried searching but cant really find the basic answers my non mechanical mind needs. hope you guys can help :)

1. which is better standard?

2. which is better for future modding? I'll keep it standard for a bit until I can afford mods.

3. do you think it would be a good idea to put a diesel box (BE3) on it.. I have a diesel on my TT and it's the best mod I've made but not sure what impact it would have on a non turbo engine.

4. scrappy wants £470 (in vat) for one of them and he said they are both good engines.

5. do they both look the same? reason I ask is that the scrappy seemed a little confused as to which one he was showing me :o does anyone have photos of both so I can make sure I get the correct one?

6. how much should I expect a garage to charge for fitting it.

7. anything else I should look out for?

Sorry for all the questions.. I'm not mechanically minded at all and I'm sure it shows so most garages would ripp me off :(

Cheers,

Adrian.

Hi,

You have all those 205's and YOU need help? :)

Here is a 1.9 Mi. The engines do look quite similar. Easier to tell when they are naked and not surrounded by engine bay etc. Inlet manifold is the biggest give away. 2.0 has a plastic inlet methinks.

What 1.9 Mi looks like.

I remember someone fitted a diesel box on their 8V, and I thought their comments were not very complementary. :o Get a 1.6 GTi 'box and your be laughing :(

I thought going price for Mi with full electronics (which u need) with no proof of re-building was about £300. I guess you can not hear scrappy engines or have any history of it?

I think fitting should be less than £1000. But I would not trust any garage, you need to know what to do with the loom etc. Fitting the acutal engine is quite straight forward. There are specialists on this site/forum that could do it.

If you can not hear the engine's running it is difficult to check things really. I would suggest make sure you have all the electronics + hoses etc. Remove cam cover check cam lobes are not scratched/worn. Could also remove the sump and take of a few big-end caps to see what the surface of the crank looks like? Unbolt the head, make sure pistons & valves are all there?

I do not know much about the 2.0 Mi/S16 so can't help too much in that area. 1.9 is slightly lighter and has a little more power. Better to get the engine which is in the better condition. A worn engine would be under powered anyhow.

Higgy.

I'd deff not pay a scrapyard £470 for an engine! thats a rediculous price! £150-200, maybe a bit more if you can see it running. But as already said, get the engine in best condition.

470 is well over the odds. they go for about 300 or so on ebay.

Is the 2.0 a S16 or GTi6 engine, but beware on the latter as the 406/306 137bhp engine's look pretty much the same to most breakers.

The thing I;ve found with the Iron block's after 100k they don;t like to hone out and need a rebore with only forged piston's around not cheap, The 1.9 liner's seem to wear better.

But any engine really needs to be bought as scrap for > £100 as the rebuild can cost allot

did u pull up to the scrappy in 5 205s?! the prices seem well over the odds unless its a new looking recon, which i would guess would cost around 4-700 for an 8v...

a better idea might be to take some pics next time your there?

£470 is way over the odds for an engine from a scrappy, most I'd pay is £200 for one with proof of mileage & full service history.

Easy way to find out which is the alloy (1.9) & steel (2.0) is with a magnet.

I wouldn't fit a diesel box to an Mi of either 1.9 or 2.0. These engine's thrive on revs & certainly don't have the torque that a TT will produce to make good use of the long ratio's. Shorter is better for these

Graham.
