Help! Big Oil Leak

Recommended Posts

Grim.Badger

My engine started leaking a LOT of oil from under the cambelt covers somewhere. It only seems to leak when its getting up to maximum temperature.

I've just spent what seems like ages taking the old cambelt off, checking the cam and crankshaft seals and replacing the crankshaft seal (the camshaft seal seemed to be dry) but after starting the car up again its still pi***ng oil everywhere and seems to have lost 2 litres whilst warming up :)

Where could it be leaking? Can oil leak from around the tensioner or the waterpump?

could be head gasket blowing out the side. clean it all off with kitchen towel, start it and watch see where it comes from.

I've just checked to see if it is the head gasket with the engine running and its difficult to see around the cam belt cos there's so much in the way, but it does seem to be coming form there. Bugger :o Its difficult to tell because the cam belt is spraying oil everywhere :(

I've looked all around the join between the head and the block and there's black goo along the back but not the front. There also seems to be a bit of oil on the fly wheel end of the exhaust manifold.

It does smoke more than usual on start up but the plugs are clean :) and also is doesn't seem to be coolant smoke.

I'd run a compression test but the car seems to be running ok aside from the fact its p***ing oil.

Just for the sake of any searches

Took the exhaust manifold off last night and found a fair amount of oil in cylinders 1 and 4, so definitely head gasket.

On a side note I managed to remove:

Air cleaner assembly, radiator and fan, oil piping, alternator, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold and a few other minor thing like the battery in TWO hours. Thats a record for me, I've spent longer removing just one of them :D
