Engine Designation And Specs

Hi everyone,

I've been on here for a while just lurking around but I now have a couple of questions to ask!

I'm building up a 205GTi to compete in Targa Tasmania. To stay within the boundaries of 'standard spec' I am allowed to only upgrade to pre-1990 Euro/UK spec. At this time, we had the 74kw DFZ engine with L-jet management and a cat. Am I right in assuming that the Pre-1990 UK cars had the higher compression DKZ engine (90ish kw)? What management would these cars have had? Did you have the BE3 gearbox or still running BE1?

Cheers in advance :D

We still had the D6B engine in 1990 (9.6cr, 95kw) running on L-jetronic with no cat. We swapped to the DKZ (9.2cr, 90kw) with a cat and running on Motronic 1.3 in late 1992/early 1993.

A 1990 would have the BE3 gearbox, I think the changover from BE1 was 88 or 89.

Isn't the D6B the Mi16 engine?

My 1991 Aus-spec 205 has the DKZ with Motronic 1.3 which is interesting. I guess using our DKZ would be OK as it's output is still below your pre-1990 model!!

Super Josh
Isn't the D6B the Mi16 engine?

The Mi was D6C in High compression form and DFW in Low comp.

So pardon my ignorance but what is the difference between a D6B and the DFZ that we got in Australia? Ours were 7.4:1 compression IIRC. Would it be a completely different head or something like different pistons to increase comp??

I presume the D6B is what us ozzies would call 'Euro-spec' ya??
