lyncho23 3 Posted February 22, 2007 hi all thought id post a new topic i took my car off the road about 2 months back because i decided it was time to do a bit of work on her, i have a list of things i want to do, but the first thing was to change the engine from a 1.6 to 1.9. im no mechanic and never done anything like this but thought it would be a bit of a challange and id get to know more about the car so i could hopefully mend it if something broke in the future. so i sourced a 1.9 non cat engine from a zx volcane and went to work on stripping down the 1.6 and taking it out of the car, not an easy task by yourself, at one point i was stood on the battery tray with my left foot on the gearbox, my left hand on the top engine mount tilting the engine whilst winching it up with my right hand. once id done this i had to take all the motronic injection bits for the 1.9, i.e distibutor, wiring loom, flywheel etc, i know some of you maybe thinkin why didnt i just stick with the motronic injection, well basically im not very good when it comes to wiring and thought it would be much easier if i just stick with the standard jetronic system. anyway i had a day off work today and decided to attempt to put the 1.9 in today and im glad to say that i mananged to do it, fair enough i havnt started the engine yet but its in and hopefully all wired up and plummed correctly , the only things i need to do now is put the drive shafts back in, connect the exhaust down pipe and change the ecu. i just wanted to share my mini challenge with you all, ive put some pics on below, sorry for the poor quality of pics. 1.6 ready to come out engine bay engine bay after i gave it a bit of a clean as it stands today cheers daz p.s il let you know if it starts
Ahl 4 Posted February 22, 2007 Nice one Daz! Make sure you get a 1.9 jetronic ECU, air flow meter and dizzy for it too. They are different on the 1.6 and might give you adverse effects or even damage the engine otherwise.

lyncho23 3 Posted February 26, 2007 hi well i just tried starting it for the first time and there was nothing, not even turning over so i thought it may have been the battery or starter motor so checked the battery n that was charged and then hit the starter motor a few times, still nothing!!!!! anyway i came in and searched on hear, the first thing i read was something about the coil connection so i checked that and it seemed fine, still wouldnt start, i had a spare so tried that...wooohhooo, it started! im well chuffed. just noticed that i need a new radiator tho!. pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted February 27, 2007 If these bits are from the ZX volcane, I'd fit the ecu & loom from that as its much better than the cr4ppy old jetronic system. Graham.
