Recommended Posts

Boys, I need help on this one.. My 309 GTI 16V rear beam tube is dead.

Need to know if someone actually compared regular 309 / 16v beams and beam tubes for differences?

More details here

Yes there are differences.

The ARB on the 16V is bigger 21mm vs 20mm

So are both torsionbars 20mm vs 19mm

Furthermore the 16V beam has a bit of negative camber on the wheels if the car came from a German-speaking country (ie Germany and Austria). This due to the arms being different.

Cheers Hilgie,

I'm familiar with all this. It is the beam tube I'm interested in.

Lesser models and GTI tube is different to GTI16v beam tube, at least Peugeot spare parts tells so.

Perhaps these differences aren't significant after all.

I guess I have to get regular 309 beam tube and check for myself then. :D

I think the 309GTi16 is a bit (1-1,5cm) wider but that's all. The 16v arms should fit the 309 tube of lesser models anyway.

The part numbers differ between GTI16 and the other 309s.

The torsion bars on my standard 309 Gti beam are 20mm.

This morning brought in a 309D rear beam, mistery solved.

Seems like differences are in beam tube-to shell iron castings and brackets.

16v casting is moulded a bit stronger, and has 3 bracket fixing points instead of 2 on regular/GTI beam.

Pressed steel bracket has also one more hole.

See pic:

Photos ASAP, haven't got camera with me today.

Now another qestion: Is this iron casting removable? If yes, are there any markings for precise alignment on assembly?

Anyone tried this at home?

:D

I think it is hard to removed as it is pressed on.

Okay, photos here, in case someone's still interested.

Left "regular" 309 beam iron-cast bracket, right 16v.

16v stuff much much stronger design.

This is interesting, i am very suprised pug went to the effort of re casting that mounting just for the gti16, i mean its not as if its doing much more work than a 8v 309 gti item. Maybe it was something to do with group N homologation. Can you still buy the gti16 tube new? if not i would look at saving that one. Maybe machine the housing to accept a larger bearing or sleeve it

Castings went off the tube undamaged yesterday. This is doable, mate did it by manufacturing custom brackets for his 30 ton workshop press. Castings need some machine work, but will be OK.

Tube problem still remains, as my "new" 309 beam is near worthless. One side is perfect with perfect-as-new shaft, another seized beyond reparation. :D:P

Got to get third one. I'm starting to run out of patience... :D

It still only appears that two bolts are used to hold the rear brace on to the tube though in that picture so the standard 309 beam tube should fit fine if thats right.

I believe its the casting that holds the bearing so in this case the tube will never wear and its the casting that needs work

Unfortunately, not. It's the tube that holds the bearing, as usual.

Casting are pressed on the tube, and they are proven removable with adequate gear of course.

Tubes are the same.

I'll take more photos as soon I gather everyting I need to make my long wanted 16v beam kick again.

Thing starts to pi** me off lately. :D
