djinuk 2 Posted February 21, 2007 ok the last 2 weeks my drive shaft has began clicking. last nite it got worse so i am changing the drive shaft as the outer cv boot is open and grease is everywhere. just wondering how hard it is to change and how much hassle. M@tt 77 Posted February 22, 2007 driveshafts are fairly straight forward "if" you can get the hub nuts undone easily you will need 1 x trolley jack 1 x long breaker bar 1 x hub nut socket 1 x hammer 1 x punch Standard sockets and spanners first drain all your gear box oil out. you will need a big breaker bar and the correct size socket for the hub nut(might require a trip to halfords as it won't be in your standard socket set) with the wheel on the floor crack the hub nut off. If you have a nut which has been staked in you will need a hammer and punch to knock out the indentation to allow you to undo it once loose jack the car up remove the wheel and then remove the wishbone pin from the hub. Then loosen the 3 strut top mount bolts so that you can swing the strut outwards and pull the driveshaft out. if it's the longer driveshaft you will also need to undo the 2 bolts that hold the intermediate bearign in the lower engine mount. when you remove the driveshafts take care that they don't damage the gearbox oil seal with the splined ends otherwise you'll find you have an oil leak when you put the new ones in and refill the gearbox. Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted February 22, 2007 use total bv oil for the gearbox, cheap enough in 1 litre bottles from motor factors or pug, you will need 2 litres. shafts come ready to fit yes and should come with new nuts for staving the edges in. For the sake of a couple of quid I would put new driveshaft oil seals in anyway, saves the hassle of finding a leak and having to remove shaft again. remember to get a new compression washer for the sump plug on the gearbox Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

M@tt 77 Posted February 22, 2007 yeah take some pics and we can put together an article for the main site. There's one for doing a gearbox but could do with one specifically for shafts. Oil seals just ping out with a large screwdriver. and the new seals just push in although you might need to tap them in gently with a rubber mallet Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
