Peugeot quoted the non-cat 1.9 at 130bhp and the cat 1.9 at 122bhp.

none of the non-cat 1.9s ever made 130bhp though - low 120s is apparently more typical.

does anyone know if the cat 122bhp is any more accurate?

early 1.6s were 105bhp; the later ones with the big valve head were 115bhp. again, not sure if these figures were accurate.

4 branch manifolds work on the standard engine; couldn't tell you what the other bits would do, although carbs will likely seriously affect fuel economy.

Peugeot never quoted any 205 engines as 130, it was 128!!!

They also made a 105bhp 1.9 engine as found in the 309GTIauto ~ Rife for a turbo conversion :)

sorry - was sure i'd seen that quoted in Peugeot literature. Just checked; my '91 owners handbook actually quotes 126bhp

maybe they became more and more honest about these things as the years ticked by :)

Whats the engine code stamped on it? I have an XU9JAZ which is the CAT version with 122BHP standard. After a stage 2 head and rebuild it made 127 on the RR. Ample power for me, with the advantage of motronic M1.3, so no idle problems :)

As for tuning, an MI is probably the cheapest option...if you can get hold of one. becoming very rare but has 160BHP standard, which is probably what you would get from carbs, cam and head work

Not being funny, but I rebuilt the head on my 1.9 and did some very minor port work.

It made 134bhp or so on an accurate rolling road, so I very much doubt if a factory fresh 1.9 was that low on power. 128 or 130hp sounds plausible, even if they are knackered now in old age.

it just seems that there are a lot of engines not running to their full potential due to people messign with AFM's and idle settings.

my standard XU9JA is running 122bhp, and that on a DIY tune and CO set to 1.5%, so I recnon a proper tune up would get it damn near 128 :)

Agree with this. How many people here have rolling roaded a brand new 205 1.9 ? How many people who post the comments about the power new ones made were actually old enough to drive when they were new !

Well I'm not qualified to comment on the actual true power output of a 1.9 8V, but look at it this way - the 1.6 had 115bhp, and the 1.9 is virtually identical with the exception of an extra 300cc (or there abouts), a very slight change in the cam, and slightly different tune. Would that actually be enough to reap an additional 13bhp to take it up to the claimed 128bhp (130ps)?

Personally I couldn;t give a s*it what the real figures are though. From a driving perspective, the 1.9 pulls strongly but it isn;t much quicker than a 1.6, which I prefer as it is a bit revier. And if you go Mi16 you get the best of both worlds (drove an Mi16 for the first time at the weekend - thanks to Marurin21 - and my god they are quick!).

128bhp sounds about right as i can keep up with my mates 140ish bhp clio 1.8 16v up to about 50mph, then due to his having 8v more he slowly pulls away.

Yes.

My knackered old engine (burning oil and rough bottom end) made 122 on a RR day (seems about average) so I don't see 128 for a factory fresh being much wrong.
