Brother Needs Help With 306 1.8 Xs Rear Discs

Recommended Posts

the pad retainers fell out, so he bought new ones. there are these little wire spring clip type things that he can't work out where they go. the only idea so far is that they're tehre to make a noise when teh pads need changing before the friction surface actually runs out.

any ideas? from the back of a T reg 1.8 XS.

they hold the pads in apart from anything else, if they are fitted wrongly the pad can be spat out with disastrous consequences.

Yeah, rather important.

I know a friend that managed to stop the car, but killed a caliper, disks and pads from this.

I don't get it? all they do is sit atop the pad not actually connected to anything?

[edit] not the 3/4 8 shaped things in the L plate thing. the ones that sit acros the centre of the pad. I don't get it.

It happened to my current shell before I owned it, the previous owner was driving at about 10mph when it spat the pad out, I refitted it and it seemed OK but later when I got the car and prepped it for an MOT I found the caliper wasn't moving on the sliders properly and traced the cause to bent caliper mounts on the trailing arm. As the beam was a reconned 309 one I was upset to say the least but jonnie205 sorted me out by pressing the good shaft off the bad arm and fitting it to a spare I had (thanks again Jonnie :)).

yeah thats what we're talking about, they hold the pads up at the other end to the L shaped angle iron thing, without it the pads are loose and WILL fall out!

They're only anti-rattle springs, if you pads fall out without them then your L-brackets are too worn.

The L shape things were brand new when that happened!

Retainer wires popped out then.

no, it was still there, retaining the L shaped thing.

I'm still running the same calipers, L shape things and retainer wires now and they are fine as long as the spring things are installed correctly.

Strange, pads definately the right way around the first time?

The springs actually try to push the pads out...

Pads were in right, it was only the missing spring clips that were wrong.

Yes they push the pads up but they also push towards the L shaped thing which I believe is how they assist in keeping the pads in.

That bit of wire would have no chance of keeping the pads in over potholes if that were the case, it's just not strong enough. Only thing I can think of is you put the L-bar in the wrong way around, as it will go in 2 ways,
