Knocking Sound

Recommended Posts

swordfish210

ok on my 205 XT there is a knocking sound coming from the front end The knock sounds when i accelarate hard i.e. over 1/2 throttle and when i corner left on the power but not off the power and when i corner left and go over a bump it makes a huge clunk. No so far in trying to solve this problem i have changed : driveshafts, both sides twice (dont ask why) both wheel bearings (they had to be changed cause they were beginning to grumble as well) lower suspension arms (this cured the knocking sound a bit) anti roll bar and bushes (ARB was bent and the bushes were knackered) and the gearbox for a recon'd one.

any advice would be greatly recived as i'm now at a loose end and havent got a clue what is causing this noise. also the car was involved in an accident in september last year which is when the knock became really violent and the car looked like this

so as you can see it was a front offside impact in to my car (the origions of the accident will not be discussed in this thread)

thanks guys

i dont realy understand what you mean, you dont need to buy anything just lay under the car with a 16mm socket and ratchet and tigten the buggers up. 2 on rear each side and 1 on front each side, cant miss them

Did you change the drop links when you did the roll bar? Have had these knocking and also heard of them hitting the caliper. Worth a look

It's not a GTI so won't have droplink unless it's had the subframe swapped?

I know you have done the lower arms but have you had a look at the hole in the hub where the ball joint goes in. Your looking to see if its still roundish and not oavalled. You would normally get the car pulling to one side on power and back the other way when let off sharpesh. These can become worn or maybe damaged in the crash . The only other thing i can think of is the right size bolts that go through the wishbone into the sub frame were not used. Good luck mate

engine/gearbox mounting?

as mentioned earlier it could be an ovaled hub to balljoint interface.

Strut top bearings.

some other loose body part?

i checked the hub today with my vernier and it was fine (well, within the tolerences i would expect) i had a look at the engine mounts and the top one looks a bit split but i wouldnt know if this causes it or not , i'll try to get a pic up and you can judge. I havent properly checked the bottom engine mount, the gearbox mount is fine.

what body parts culd be loose?

bumper, bonnet could need adjusting.

apart from that its very hard to say without hearing the noise and personally I'd get a friendly mechanic to have a look to see if they could give you a few pointers.

k i'll have a check but i dont think its a body panel or anything as i'v had them off quite a few times and all the fixtures and fittings are in good condtion, i'll probably try to lure one of my lectureres at college to have a listen for me, thanks mate

Ok the car went for it's MOT on thursday and it failed because both bottom ball joints had failed (accident damage i assume) so i got some new wishbones and fitted them on friday morning and it has since passed the MOT. Only trouble is, is that the knockng sound is still very much there and it seems to have got worse since the new wishbones have been fitted. Where as the car only used to knock when accelarating and cornereing left under power it now knocks when cornering right under power as well and the knock seems to have got more violent. any more ideas
