Differences Between Xs And Gti Setup

Recommended Posts

djinuk

I have a friend who owns a 1.9 gti and he said the front end on the xs feels very lose. I know I have a driveshaft clicking and a top mount I need to replace but is there any other bits that maybe I should change and replace the gti spec to improve the handling of the car. Any advice as always appreciated. would also just like to add a big thank you to gti drivers on the whole as the car is coming together now and I am enjoying it more and more due to the members and admins of these forums :o

The front subframe & anti rollbar set up is totally different.

On the XS the arb ends fit through the lower wishbone as it is only mounted in one point where the GTi has twin inner mounts for the wishbone to the subframe & the arb is linked directly to the strut.

To change to the GTi spec you need the full subframe, arb & wishbones along with different front shocks for the droplinks to conect to.

You need to find exactly what is causing the lose feeling on your car rather than replacing things on the off chance its them. It could be wishbone bushes, balljoints, track rod ends, shock absorbers, steering rack or even the hubs that have ovalled lower balljoit holes.

Graham.

Ah ok quite a lot of diffrences between the two then. Ill start by fixing the obvious problems. If I got myself a set of gti front shocks do you know if they would go straight onto my xs model without any problems?. sorry to be such a pain.

You also need to move the gear post on the gti subframe as it's in a diff place.

I am just going to work with the setup on the xs for now and see if i can get it handling better. Ive been told somebody has cut the springs aswell so thats half the problem most likely. like i say though i need to know if i put the gti suspension on i.e dampers + springs are they any diffrent to fit onto my model. cheers:)

i think the gti shock and spring should fit into xs hub as i thought the only differences are where the drive shafts fit. could be wrong though.

and when me and alex drove it we meant loose as in the steering feel, seems to easy and light to turn like your not connected with the road unlike all other gtis ive driven. it suprised as it has 1.9 gti wheels and lowered suspension(didnt know it was cut springs though)

hopefully it describes the feel a bit more.

it could have crap srings on the standard shocks that make the xs feel lose on the front

there no big point in changing the subframe over to a xs from a gti as theres easiser ways to get the xs to out handle a stock gti you may not know it but there are performace front arms and a few other things out there for the xs,,

my other halfs 205 roland garros has 13" standard alloys and tryed up with 165 tryes and that doesnt feel loose on the front compared to the track car so there is something wrong with a bush or two

frist step change the arms about £12 each and comes complete with arb bushes in them that could be your problem

The GTI shocks will fit straight in by the way, and will be a big improvement if you have standard shocks at the moment.

And as Jrod suggested, the poly bushes are well worth it!
