Big Power Loss

Recommended Posts

futura

A few months ago I was suspecting having leaking injectors so I got a spare set and tried them on.

As the car would start on the button I sent my old ones for a clean/refurb and drove with the spare set for a couple of days (130 miles max). Even though it was starting on the button, the engine was running rough and was vibrating a lot. I also had a big loss of power.

I fitted the refurbished injectors back on thinking the loss of power would disappear. Vibrations and rough running did disappear, but I am still very low on power since then. It really struggles to rev and must be producing 90bhp max!

I checked spark plug number 4 and it looked fine (not melted), mixture could be better but it was ok (dark grey towards brownish). I haven't checked the 3 other spark plugs yet. There are no leaks following the injectors refurbishment.

Even though I am aware that setting up the engine wouldn't be luxury, I am quite concerned about such a big loss of power as I don't think I will cure the problem just by setting the engine up.

Any experience/advice on this would be much appreciated

i Have had this problem! unfortunetly for me the head went shortly after. i hope that isnt the case for you! i think your best bet will be to whip all the plugs out and give them a clean. Also make sure your airflow meter connections are clean and all the breather pipes. All these things are common on the XU! They need to be cleaned regulary to keep the engine running smooth.

Have a ago at it and let us know im sure youl sort it!

The head gasket went between pistons 2 and 3. Over time the hole got bigger until it started throwing coolent out the exhaust. Only when i took the head off to be skimmed i found a big hole where the cam seal sits. I was loosing compression about 6 weeks b4. It drove a while before it went. Tough old engine these XU's. Im doing a gti-6 conversion now. i just dont think repairing the 1.6 is worth it now.

More power

Last time the head gasket went on my TU it just started losing water, no loss of power at all, tough engines all the pug units I think!

Only knew when I checked the plugs and found one suspicously clean.

Futura do a compression check first thing to find out whats going on.

steve031286 that hole under the cam seal is ment to be there, looks like it isnt but it is.
