405 Mi16 Wont Start

Recommended Posts

luggy

Ive recently purchased a 405 mi16 3 row ecu, which was in storage for the last two years. It was running fine until last week and now it wont start, :D Spark plugs, leads, dizzy and rotor cap replaced known good coil and and ignition amp used, checked earthing points for corrosion. Theres fuel getting through but no spark, the old plugs were quite sooted up. It did fire up briefly for about 4 seconds then died then nothing after. What else could it be? could it be the crank sensor? AFM?. How do you reset the ECU? Im starting to run out of ideas any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i'd think crank sensor.

to reset the ecu disconnect the battery and leave it for 20-30 minutes.

I had this prob, yes i had new crank sensor.

Not only that timing was out as i also kept burnin out rotors and dizzy caps due to belt tentioner givin up.

Cheers for the responses. Ive reset ECU, changed the CAS for a new one, still no spark. Going to see if the if the fuel pump is working tomorrow and changed the fuel filter and double check the earths as well as the timing. Might it be a dead ECU? how common are ECU failures on 405 MI16?

Check the relays on the loom. I had intermitent starting problems with mine and it was one of the relays.

Timing checked and OK. Changed the injector relay and fuel pump relay, no fuel being pumped through the system. My main concern is the lack of spark and fuel considering Ive swapped out everything from the ignition side indicates like Im going to need an ECU. :)

Bought a fault code reader and I was getting error 21 which is the throttle poteniometer. Anyway Ecu swapped fired up straight away ;) and she runs as sweet as a nut. If the ECU was faulty then why was I getting the error codes. Had a look at the old one which is still sealed with yellow sealant on the screws, no rust or water ingress on the inside which is weird. Is it worth getting it fixed?

Thanks for the replies

Cheers Baz for the ECU

It has got to be worth breaking it open and having a look inside. I seem to recall from another thread you're an electronics engineer Luggy?

Chances are it's just a dry joint or one of the power devices has failed.

It can't be too serious if you can still drag error codes out of it.

I guess these are rare and valuable enough to let one of the specialists out there repair it.

Well turned out that there was a "dry joint" got a mate to show me how to sort the problem out and do some soldering. Did a compression test after the engine was warmed up and with the throttle open and no oil, I got 210-190-210-190, which isnt bad considering the cars done a 192k. The engines' now been taken out and put in storage until I can get decent workshop space to recon the engine. One thing I did notice when taking the loom out that there was no connection to the oil pressure gauge only to the oil switch, but it make sense as theres no oil pressure gauge in the 405, just got to remember to transfer it from old loom to new.
