matt205xs 0 Posted February 17, 2007 when turning over by hand there was no strange knocks from the engine, so started it with key, it would turn over but there was a 'chugg' noise coming from engine, checked plugs , there wasnt a constant spark, so checked the timing again by putting the locking pins in, -crank lined up thru the angled slot -then went to lock the cam pulleys and there way off mark, the front pulley looks 8 teeth away from where i tipexed the pully and head, anyone know what the hell has happened?? Sandy 191 Posted February 17, 2007 Alignment error or cambelt slipped most likely.
matt205xs 0 Posted February 17, 2007 rite ive taken off the cam belt lined up all the pulleys, now when trying to put the belt back on the exhaust cam pulley keeps jumping a tooth! so need a little break as i havnt got any patience! would this of done any damage to the engine? PsychoSimon 0 Posted February 17, 2007 if you wound it over by hand and nothing touched you should be fine. the chug you heard would probably be air escaping from partially opened valve on the compression stroke. should be fine mate
matt205xs 0 Posted February 17, 2007 got the belt back on all timed up, turned it over 4 times by hand, and its done it again, gone 8 teeth out!
Daz_C 8 1 Cars Posted February 17, 2007 Has it jumped 8 teeth or just moved out of line by 8 teeth ? Are you tensioning the belt properly ?
matt205xs 0 Posted February 17, 2007 its moved out of line 8 teeth, is it not the same? got the belt back on now, i may be tensioning it wrong, how is it suppose to be done?
welshpug 1,666 Posted February 17, 2007 dont forget this is 4 stroke. you'll need to rotate the engine twice to reach the same point on TDC IIRC. just confirmed with haynes, 2 complete revolutions to bring no1 back to tdc.
PsychoSimon 0 Posted February 17, 2007 to make sure you got the right tension, it shouldnt twist any more than about 90 degrees on the longest stretch of the belt if you get me?
matt205xs 0 Posted February 17, 2007 yes it does that, but its also slack between the cam pulleys?
PsychoSimon 0 Posted February 17, 2007 thats not tight enough then. What you need to do, is when you put the belt in between the cam pulleys, put it a tooth out, as i've badly drawn in paint lol so that when you tighten the belt, it pulls the slack from bewteen the pulleys as well. that should stop your problem. Will take a bit of fecking about though. May I ask why your not using locking pins on the cams?
matt205xs 0 Posted February 17, 2007 now its finished! starts and runs fine, it seemed to have tightened up itself? not sure how... thanks for all replys!
