Edd-XS 0 Posted February 16, 2007 Im going to be running my engine in on a 10/40 mineral oil soon, and was going to replace it with a 10/40 castrol magnetec when its been run in, but ive seen at work they are selling some 'super mobil' stuff at a decent price for 5 litres (I can get either at trade anyhow) Just wondering is one better then the other? or are they basically the same in different bottles? Cheers Edd
boombang 2 Posted February 16, 2007 I've found magnatec goes clumpy every time I used it. Seems very prone to emulsify, then it all sticks together and goes "gloopy". I would never use it again.
paul wicks 0 Posted February 16, 2007 another no for magnatec, tbh halfords 10W 40 is better in my opinion and cheaper
jonnie205 1 Posted February 16, 2007 Both are very poor oils, i would highly reccomend millers CSS 10w 40 or CFS 10w 40. This oil i smore expensive but it is very very high quality
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted February 16, 2007 10/40 Magnatec is fine, I've always used it in my Mi16 and put more road and track miles on it than most people will ever do on here with a single engine. By coincidence, the last couple of changes I've used Mobil Super 10/40 only because Cost Co stopped stocking Magnatec!!
base-1 17 Posted February 17, 2007 Magnatec is cheapo crap really. Second Jonnie's Millers recommendation, for the money you will struggle to find anything on par or better, they make some real good stuff! A good cheap option is Shell Helix Plus 10-40. Very very good like the Millers, depending where you get it can be dirt cheap too
petert 601 Posted February 17, 2007 My recommendation would be Shell Helix Ultra 15W-50, after running in with the mineral oil.
Faz85 0 Posted February 17, 2007 My local stopped stocking Millers, and replaced there range with Comma oils. I have been using that for the last 6 months in the 205 and in a ford mundane (mondeo) also. It seems to be on a par with Millers, and is relatively inexpensive. C_W 3 1 Cars Posted February 20, 2007 How do people know one 10/40 oil is better than another? Does it taste better or something?
hengti 2 Posted February 20, 2007 How do people know one 10/40 oil is better than another? Does it taste better or something? is smells nicer as the knackered engine burns it! are these engines particularly sensitive to oil choice anyway? i've no idea how 'good' it is but i've always used Duckhams Q (QXR) and haven't had any related problems at all (210k miles)
Grim.Badger 15 Posted February 20, 2007 How do people know one 10/40 oil is better than another? Does it taste better or something? I may have imagined it but I'm sure my old diesel would spin up better with certain oils, especially when cold; Castrol GTD magnatec was my oil of choice. My prime concern nowadays is how fast my GTi engine burns the damn stuff however I can feel a slight difference at high revs, presumably as poorer oils allow too much friction and the car feels like it's holding back a bit. I found Castrol to be too "light" and was burnt of very quickly. Shell is quite impressive though for both burn resistance and how the engine feels at high revs. Bizzarely enough one of the best oils I've used is Wilkinsons 20w50 (I'm desparate and had a can lying around), the engine seems to spin well and it burn quite slowly. I'd go back to Shell though if I had the choice.
Revla 2 Posted February 20, 2007 Shell fan now too. 10W40 Shell Helix....... Skip Brown recommendation..........
Beastie 1 Posted February 22, 2007 How do people know one 10/40 oil is better than another? Does it taste better or something? That's pretty much what I was wondering too. It was drummed in to me when I studied engineering well over 20 years ago that there's not much point expressing an opinion unless you have some calculations or better still some controlled experimental data to back yourself up. If you don't have those then you are just perpetuating saloon bar myths and wasting everyones time Years of professional experience has given me no reason to criticise Magnatec. People often express the wish to work within accepted engineering practise on this forum and I haven't any good empirical data on the subject. Therefore this is as far as I'm qualified to comment
Edd-XS 0 Posted February 22, 2007 Haha seems there are a few opinions floating about! I have no idea where my local shell or millers oil dealers are, so Halfords 10/40 it is! Wont be in too long as I intend to do regular oil changes and look after it, but it is at the end of the day a solid metal engine, not a bag of kittens! So I guess it doesnt make 'that' much diference if well looked after Ta for the info anyway! Edd
welshpug 1,666 Posted February 22, 2007 Total Quartz whatever my garage sticks in smells good, and my engine doesnt burn it so it lasts well
