Smoking Engine.

Recommended Posts

I ran the 205 for the first time in a long time today to get everything nice and hot, however I am a little concerned about the amount of smoke from the exhaust. It smells like it is burning oil. It is a 1.9 GTi with 110'000 miles on it. I have had it sitting around for about 4 months but not sure how long it sat before I got it. It also has a very slight top end tap when cold. With the vast experience and knowledge found here and my complete lack of any on the 205, am I looking at a full engine rebuild, stem seals or just drive it and hope it stops??? The whole purpose of my project is low budget and am reluctant to do a full rebuild but if needs must I'll have to bite the bullet. Any wordsof wisdom??

My advice, take it for a drive and then see.

I've done up a few old knackers, one being an orange/red :) 1.6 Gti that had been sitting for 18 months. When i finally got it running (James will back me up on this) it was a smookey joe. 30 miles later after passing the mot with a good blast down the dual carrage way, and it was perfect. Just oil and crap in the exhaust etc. And thats not just this car, Polos, mi16s etc in my experience of my dealings.

But if its still there after that, then maybe you have a problem.

with stem seals (or valve guides) the main indicator would be smoke on start up that clears fairly quickly. you can also 'test' by booting it up to high revs in second and then coming off the power to let it coast down - if you get smoke it's likely the stem seals. could be guides but less likely.

constant smoking would suggest rings/bores which you'd have to be worried about if it has been sat for a long time.

a properly carried out compression test would help too. have a look on PumaRacing's site - there's a guide there.

if it's any comfort, my 1.9 has now done 210k on the original engine which sounds like a bag of spanners. it gets some hammer and the only real trouble i've had with it has been the HG (x1) and the stem seals (x2). it burns a little oil (which is going to be the guides/rings/bores given that i last had the stem seals done a year ago) but it really isn't a particular problem on mine.

4 months is a long enough time for a good ammount of oil to seep past the stem seals even if they are in relative good condition.

Thanks guys, thats the answer I was hoping for. I'll drive it for a while after the MOT and see what happens then. Hopefully it'll be o.k.

I had a similar problem with my GTI, 1.6 115K, smoking like a gooden.....

After buying all the parts to change the stem seals, i decided i would just change the oil, oil filter and clean the breather system... and boy it cured it straight away,

so no more driving around all embarresd

UPDATE

Drove it to work on yesterday and it had stopped smoking by the time I had got there. Whilst the car was there I also cleaned all the almost blocked breathers, adjusted the throttle cable, set up throttle switch adjusted the timing and CO. Now she runs sooo sweet. All of the above was so far out it was amazing it ran at all. HC were 1500 ppm now down to 140ppm.

After a rather brisk drive home I am now in love with the 205. On completely standard suspension (although mostly new now) it handle so well and considering it sit a mile from the road there is very little body roll. Superb little car, well done Peugeot. (Never thought I'd be saying that.)
