Shunting When On Or Off Throttle

Recommended Posts

dommorton

I have an 8v 1.9 and it seems to be running quite sweet bar one annoying little glitch.

When driving along and coming off or going back on throttle the engine shunts once quite violently before picking up or slowing down.

It's hard to describe but it's like the power is momentarily cut then re-established.

Any idea what could be causing this? The car has a K&N 57i kit on it but that shouldn't cause this as I had one on my last 205 with no ill effect.

I've had similar problems when the engine mounts were worn, particularly the lower mount.

Worth looking into.

Don't think it's that. My top mount is chocked out and the engine hardly moves now.

It's like the ignition gets cut when the throttle is slammed shut. Was thinking it may be something related to the TPS?

What happpens to the dash lights when it cuts out? Anything unusual?

You probably know this but the standard fuel/ignition set-up on the 8v has a fuel cut-off on zero throttle position - it's one of those "they all do that" traits that have to be driven round.

If you've chocked your engine mounts to circumvent this behaviour then you've actually made it worse by removing the damping effect of the mounts.

Try cleaning out the inlet manifold and all the breather hoses this helped on mine and it's free.

Not any weird dash behaviour. No other 205 I've owned or driven has been like it so can't be normal.

I'll clean out the throttle, inlet and breathers and see if it helps cheers :)

My 405 is a bit like this at times, a new throttlebody and tps helped a bit.

Hey, what speed can you get up the hill out of Calne? :)

Ah Cherhill!

Can't remember for the 205 as it's been years since I took one up there. Only had this one on the road a few days.

Back in the day I had my first 1.9 off the clock coming down there :) Been ruined since then with an OTT Police presence and the 40 limit past the village.

What's my benchmark?

Once the Mi is run in I may have to give that stretch a try.

Dommorton - It is alleged that your car may have managed to go off the clock down a hill towards Swindon on something that looked like a private stretch of the M4. That was with a significant tail wind trying to show an BMW M3 what was what....the M3 pulled along side with the 205 at max velocity, looked across and smiled, then went off into the distance..... :D:)

Hi Dom,

I have the same symptoms as you on my 6. I think its TPS related as the connections are very flaky.

Really, that is strange it was one of the quickest 1.9s I have come across. It had considerably more go about than the rebuilt 8v I used to own. I wonder what has changed?

Well I'd love to give details but I don't trust forums these days, never know who could be watching! There are some good roads around here though.

The one leaving Calne to head to Devizes via that golf course tests the handling nicely in the bends. There's also an interesting roman road section on the road down to Beckhampton. Long time back Steve.C and I went down there at a nice leisurely pace :)

I know them well :)

Best by far tho is the lane from Compton Bassett to Wootton Bassett Via Bushdon.

Back on topic I seem to have pretty much cured my problem by advancing the ignition timing.

Must have been retarded for 95RON as now it picks up a lot cleaner and doesn't shunt as heavily.
