Best Brakes For 1.6 Gti

Recommended Posts

91 1.6 GTI on a J

I don't want to upgrade the wheels to 15' as I like the original wheels.

Does anybody have recommendation for upgraded disk / drums. I remember Tarox used to do uprated Drums / Shoes years ago but cannot find any mention of them now. Any ideas

You are slightly limited in using the 1.6 hubs but tbh if its purely a road car then a new set of disks, maybe grooved and a set of mintex pads it should stop just fine.

Yep. Will be kept as a road car. Just want a nice firm brake pedal more than anything else. Any particular manufacturer recommended for the disks?

Ive found Brembo grooved disks to be good, along with Red dot and tarox a search may give you more results.

Personally i'd avoid drilled disks as they are known to crack. Fitting goodridge braided lines is also a good idea top help firm up the pedal, mintex 1144 pads and it should stop fine. Obviously worth checking your shoes but standard ones should be fine as the majority of braking is done with the front.

If you want shorter pedal travel you could always upgrade the MC with one off a 405 or 406, but considering your using standard calipers this shouldnt be necessary.
