Lillpete 0 Posted February 8, 2007 OK there is a rattling noise coming from my Mi engined 205 (sounds like a chain), I thought this might be the oil pump chain?? do they have any other chains like to link the cams or anything??
Normski 1 Posted February 8, 2007 OK there is a rattling noise coming from my Mi engined 205 (sounds like a chain), I thought this might be the oil pump chain?? do they have any other chains like to link the cams or anything?? No, the only chain is the oil pump drive. I'm not sure it would be that, because the it's only a short chain run. Can you describe the noise more i.e. under what conditions it occurs? taylorspug 7 Posted February 8, 2007 Noises around there can be very deceptive. My engine has a bit of a rattle when its cold, ive traced it back to the gearbox (been like it for 10k now and the 'box is fine!). However if you stick your head up the cambelt end of the engine you would swear blind it was coming from there. Also kind of sounds like a chain rattling noise... Lillpete 0 Posted February 8, 2007 I can hear it worst at tickover but when you rev it could well still be there but it gets drowned out? it's not effected by the clutch being depressed? and TBH the only way I can describe it is that it sounds like a rattley chain
Dream Weaver 2 Posted February 8, 2007 Try the heatshield round the back of the manifold.
taylorspug 7 Posted February 8, 2007 (edited) If it still does it with the clutch pressed then that rules out the gearbox then! Edited February 8, 2007 by taylorspug
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted February 11, 2007 Yea a rattling clutch thrust bearing can sound pretty worrying which should stop when you press the clutch. My old 8v engine used to rattle slightly when cold (it was the oil pump chain), when it was changed it was fine after that.
Lillpete 0 Posted February 11, 2007 I'll check the heat shield If it's not that, is it much of a job to replace the pump/chain??
maxi 36 1 Cars Posted February 12, 2007 Sump off, pump off, cambelt off, front plate off, chain off. Refitting is a reversal (obviously bottom pulley etc to come off too). Took me about 3hours when I changed mine in the car. Maxi
