What Should The Gearstick Be Like Under The Gearknob?

Recommended Posts

Doof

Ok my car had some lame aftermarket gearknob on and i decided to pull it off this morning. All well and good, i'll just stick the new GTi one on then....oh no wait, i wont because it doesn't fit!

The top of the gearstick is just flat and looks like something might have been cut off. Certainly the hole in the gearknob is smaller than the end of the gearstick.

Has my gearstick been cut off? I can't bare driving around using a tiny metal rod to change gears much longer.

Is it hard to get the whole gearstick out if it has been cut?

Cheers,

Lewis

The end of the stick should be barbed, like this...

Getting the stick out is a pain as you have to take the centre console out to get to the bolts, but other than that it's easy enough.

You should be able to take the stick out with the console in.remove the gaiter and shroud, unbolt /unscrew the front of the console to allow you to raise it slightly at the front and access is possible to all the nuts around the retaining piece

You definately can swap the gearstick without removing the whole centre console. I did it this way when I fitted one of Miles gearsticks & it only took about 15 minutes start to finish. :)

Looks like someone decided to chop the gearstick off then, doh!

Looks like i'll be pulling my interior apart sometime soon then.

There isn't much interior to pull apart!!

Two screws to take the cover off & then everything is there for removing the gearstick.

Easy peasy, even for you. :)

Agreed, even i could do it. but with the amount of work i've got at the minute i feel guilty washing my car let alone working on it...although 15 mins isn't much, even if it'd take 1 hour for me.

So you don't actually need to even go under the car, now this is sounding like my sort of job

Yeah you shouldn't need to go under the car, or maybe just to pop on one ball joint of the gear rod.

But its simple, and obivous when you remove the 2 screws for the gaitor. Something like 4 10/11 mm nuts, and maybe if you need to (when i did all this i had to install the whole system) a 16+17mm nut and bolt.

Not this time but if I'd known there would be a request for pictures I could've got some shiowing part opf the task, I've just been out taking the rotten & damp sound proofing out from under the front carpet with the centre console as far removed as my front seats allow.

I had forgotten about the 4 x 10mm nuts though as Alistair mentions though which hold down the cover & the through bolt for the gearstick is under there.

Just had a quick search for a suitable picture though & the article on the main site for stripping out a 205 (by T3K & doof) shows most of what you need to see.

No excuse now lewis. ;)
