Neg Camber Rear Beam Rebuild

Recommended Posts

axnutty

BACKGROUND:

Throwing myself in at the deep end I decided that whilst my current rear beam is working spot on, I dont know if its been rebuilt in the past, who did it, or to what level...hence an "unknown" and as Im using my car everyday I want/need it to be good.

Now every car I get as a road car I always think, keep it standard, ive other cars - put the tuning goodies onto them. But then you end up driving some road and thinking " I wish I had a bit more omph here, or better grip there, etc, etc" next thing I find myself on eBay pushing the limits of my credit card... :D ...again

Its now got to the point that I try and restrict myself to power mods...as thats where the most fun is at. B) But as yet I always end up doing some suspension and brakes, possibly not even touching the engine at all in the end.

So when I got my 205 a couple of months back I told myself once again, NO MODS!!

PRESENT SITUATION:

I think to myself... ill rebuild the back axle, standard spec will be fine.

Somehow I wake up next day holding a 24mm ARB....balls. :o

Followed by the very sensible (theyre cheaper) solid mount kit.

Followed by a good condition base model tube beam (thanks Graham ;) and thanks for pointing me in the direction of neg camber ZX 16V trailing arms....)

...a trip to my local scrappers and a set of ZX 16v trailing arms find there way to my house. Balls again. :o

A number of other bits arrive (seal kits, etc)

A set of Brembo 4pots materilze themselves....

...and I find myself currently searching for a brake bias valve... DAMMIT!!!

Dam it! :o

Anyways Im rambling on ;) Time for some pics!

ZX trailing arm with 205 GTi 1.9 arm for comparison.

Collection of torsion bars (Wish you could use the ZX/306 ones ;) )

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/axnutty/Image-180.jpg

On the subject of torsion bars - Some data:

205 GTi: TB = 991mm[19mm] ARB = 1095mm[19mm]

309 GTi: TB = 1028mm ARB[21mm] = 1130mm[21mm]

106 GTi: TB = 970mm ARB[19mm] = 1080mm[21mm]

ZX 16V: TB 1070mm ARB[21mm] = 1172mm[24mm]

Thats end to end length. [figures] = thickness

It would seem that 106GTi ARBS could possibley be created by using ZX torsion bars?? Its a shame the 106 TBs wont safely fit the 205 as ive more than enough uprated 106 stuff! :)

Cleaning the trailing arms (Not much fun, even less fun was cleaning the tube)

Some of the seals - prices (if you can read them are each and minus VAT)

Image-184.jpg

Collection of bits - still after a set of front discs, a brake bias valve, a new set of alloys...

Preparing car for onslaught of back axle this week (update later)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/axnutty/Image-186.jpg

Close up - got some funny looks in my vilage cleaning the underside of a car

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/axnutty/Image-187.jpg

So far so good...I will update hopefully later this week with the fitment progress and *fingers crossed* singing the praises of neg camber (1 degree and 0 degree toe in IIRC) ZX arms!!!

Only snag so far is the ABS sensor and wheel on one of the hubs. (Im not using ABS, but would like it there in case I ever do ;) ) One of the sensors has what looks like a hairline crack in it, and also the wheel on the hub is split. Is this replacable? Is it cheap? Could I not just epoxy it back on or is that a really silly idea? On the subject of ABS, how the hell do you remove an ABS sensor!!! They seem to be in solid!

Cracked ABS wheel.

1.2 on the 306, and I *think* 1.0 on the ZX

Hi,

Just to confirm, it's impossible to use TB's from any car (ie 106, ZX, 205, 309 etc) as ARB on a different car. Firstly the spline diameters are different and the number of teeth / splines aren't the same.

I should know, I make them.

LOL Nice one... I just thought it now as I was writing out the lengths... not a lot of point anyway even if you could, as a 21mm ARB is standard in 106GTis, Rallyes, SAXO VTs, and VTr...

Infact I think the 106Rallye S2 uses a 24mm...

I take it you supply a compnay then Chris? Or do you sell them direct? I wouldnt mind some uprated TBs

Just to clear one thing up, 309 GTi bars are 20mm not 21mm. Only the 309 GTi 16v has 21mm bars.

I hope the 309 bars will fit the ZX arms now I've got some.

Off to check next.

Graham.

Chris,

I've just tried two sets of standard 205 bars on the ZX arms I have & they fit perfectly. I'll try my 21mm 205 bars & the 22mm 309 ones I got from you tomorrow & post if there is any problems with any of them.

Graham.

Thanks for the pic resize Pugtorque. Apologies

I think Chris was in response to my "ZX TBs are nearly same length as 106 ARBs..." AFAIK the TBs should be interchangeable shouldnt they? Given the 205 TBs fit the ZX arms and 309 ones fit a 205 trailing arm, it would stand to reason that your 22mm 309 ones would fit the ZX arms wouldnt they?

Thanks for the 309 standard size update btw...only ones I havent got so wasnt sure... did a search and someone said they were 21mm...must have been about the 16v as you say.

Yes they do, I was using them on the Goodwood. Incedentally, I used ZX drum axle arms with the pins and caliper brackets etc swapped over from the 309. Be prepared for a slight lack of straight line stability with reduced toe, it makes the car wonderfully pliable mid corner though as a bonus.

Rally Slag

you can weld them ABS rings back together, i've done it before at work as the customer was to tight to buy a new one, so i had to weld it back together and then use a tiny grinder to make it look right again. and as for the abs sensor, we allways get that trouble at work wiv old cars, usually only way to get them out is to brake them out with a hammer and punch, then when fitting new ones, lots of copper grease on it and clean the rust out the hole with some 80 or 40 grit emery cloth

Excellent - well I shall a price up a ABS wheel tomorrow and if they are expensive I wont bother and just weld it then..cant see it being expensive mind :(

As for the sensors - im not using them, but they can just stay there then...one day you never know! :)

Interesting thread, I am just rebuilding my beam at the moment and might change to those ZX arms if I can find some!

In your picsture:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/axnutty/Image-184.jpg

Are these all the parts required for a rebuild and if so, how many of each?

I see:

Beam Outer Seal Cap 515409 £0.84 x2?

Beam Seal 515408 £3.43 x2?

Outer Bearing 513249 £7.68 x 2?

Inner Bearing 513145 £7.40 x2?

ARB Seal 517224 £4.36 x2?

ARB End Plate Seal 517403 £0.67 x2?

Beam End Tube 515410 £1.20 x2?
